Foilboard (Pocket/Strapless) Paulownia

Postby butterfish » Tue Oct 30, 2018 6:09 pm

hey

want to build a simple pocket foilboard with paulownia and glass. edges with resin and cottonflocks, foil attachement too.

my question: is it ok to laminate with just one (heavy) layer of glass (triax 830g/m).

goal is maximum of stability and stiffness.

board size 89*39cm

thx

hi, 830gsm might be even too heavy! You need that board to keep afloat with the foil kit, so every less gram of material that's heavier than water counts!
And with that pocket size you'll need to go thicker, so you should gain enough stiffness.

This guy at Wooden Stuff has recently made 2 paulownia foil boards, 135-140cm long if I'm not wrong. See below links to his FB page.
The 'yellow' board is a 3-layer hollow core construction (couldn't find the WIP photos) and has some very complex bottom shape, as also intended for hybrid (foil or directional).

Reach out to him and I'm sure he'll help you out! Very cool guy, passionate about everything that can be made out of paulownia :)

P.S. just found the wip photo and another one with a cork traction pad that had been added later on.

I made 2 pocket boards out of paulownia, 99 and 97cm.
Just one 6oz (200g) layer all round overlapped on the rails. An extra layer over the base plate. It seems to be enough.
Both boards are on target for weight, strength and stiffness, and are holding up well.

thx! one layer each side with 200g? is there any flex? how thick is the paulownia core? do you have no epoxy rails? just overlapped glass? foil mount is with epoxy? with how many layers do you reinforce the area where the foil is adapted? total wheigt of your board?

Yeah, that's it. Boards are about an inch thick, laminated, not completely solid.
There's 3 layers over the base plate area, but 2 is enough, as I still have a 3mm perspex sheet to distribute the point load at the front of the plate.
The second one has uni carbon strips for added stiffness as I wanted to ride it with a surf foil. There's no discernable flex while riding.
Total weight with full deckpad is about 2.6kg.

i know those boards. amazing piece of art! think my manufacturing skills are a bit less

but yeah, such a board i want to built. my paulowniais 18mm thick. any idea how to get a bit of rocker in the last third boardsection? want a minimal nose rockerof about 4-5cm.

should i flatten out the rails? epoxy rails or laminate them with glass?

Yeah schenkles is the gold standard for paulownia foilboards.
I also don't have those skills but still made a board I like.
I've got a substantial amount of rocker, about 9cm in total.
My board is laminated. It's not completely solid.
I'll try to upload a pic or two.
The only way you'll bend 18mm solid plank is with steam.

yes please! is anybody riding his micro pocket foildeck complete flat, without rocker? the boards from greg drexler (boardriding maui) look total flat! do you think it matters? with a board lenght of about 90cm you just have two options: fly (foil) or fail. riding on water inst really possible...
