Pocket board building

Postby TomW » Sun Nov 25, 2018 1:47 pm

I was making a surf/foil convertible and split board, but changed my mind and cut the blank down to a 105 Pocket.
Might still make it split, but debating if I can somehow get it into a bag with mast and wings and check it in on flights as regular bag.

If you make it a bit smaller, you should be able to check it in on flights. In the states at least, airlines allow 62 linear inches (sum of length, width, and height). 5 inches in height is the minimum you can get away with if you want to fit a mast in the same bag. That leaves 57 inches for height plus width (145 cm). My everyday board is 43x17.5 inches (109x44 cm). I could easily bring width down to 16 inches. Bringing length down is harder, but since it is already too short to handle any touch downs, I think 40 inches would be ok. 40x16 inches (and 5 inch height for mast) leaves an inch of grace for the bag. That is about 101.5x40.5 cm. Small for sure, but not much smaller than my board, and much easier to travel with.

I've looked at my stance and foot position on photos of me on my 120 cm board. Photos taken with line mount. This tells me I can cut 50mm from the tail and 250 from nose and still have plenty of room. So I'm cutting it down even more.

So the board will be 90*45*3,5. My mast is 93cm with a 140mm wide plate.

I found a company in UK that will make a bag for me at a reasonable price. Bag will have outside dimension 95*47*16 = 158cm which is common restriction.

The mast will lay on top of board with plate hanging off the tail.
I'll be able to get my 9 and 7 Hyperlink, wings, fuselage, board short harness, bar, shorty wetsuit in the bag. That's what I need to get in.
Other stuff like helmet, clothes etc I can take carry-on. Normally travel to warm places.

You mean the dark foam inlay? That's HD foam. I started with a 135 surf/ foil convertible. Changed my mind to do only foilboard 105cm. Cut it down. Now decided I'll do 90cm board for compact travel. So I'll cut more off...

Plummet the last pick is before I cut off the tail.

Max, I have about 90mm nose rocker on my 135, 120, and this one , I'll cut tail down so nose rocker unchanged. Might take 10-20mm off nose.

Looks good. Great idea. I might look for a damaged blank to shape down for a pocketboard myself. I was thinking of doing a divinicell core but this could be cheaper.

Please post more photos as you build. I'm curious how you'll reinforce the bolt holes and how light it ends up being.

A shape that looks something like this would probably be the most travel friendly outline. It's maybe a bit to big with 106x43cm dimensions. The weight must also be a travellers dream at 1.5kg or 2.7kg complete with foil!

The hard thing for this combo will be how to fit the
mast-fuselage in a bag.
