I put my 90 cm on the other day and had 2 magic sessions in a lagoon. WOW.
Then I went out in turbulent and 1m Wind swell in 6-12 Ms gusts. It was a whole other ball game...it's challenging, as there's no " dampening" at all. But I'm sticking with it now for a while. I think it's worth it. Agility.

Tactics to avoid lifting or cracking glass when through drilling:

...

Or drill a small pilot hole all the way, then a shallow full width hole from each side, then ream it out to full width...
I opted for this solution. It worked. I started using the blocking technique but it splintered a little bit so I stopped and just came through the other side. It might have been a little more work, but I think it was worth it.

I put the new holes so the back of the base plate is 1 inch from the back of the board. That location turned out to be perfect for my stance, which is narrower on the small board. I have taken it out a few times in flat water and it is so much fun, even in lighter wind (9kn). I don’t chase anything below that.

It’s a great feeling to ride something you made, even if it is rough around the edges. My next one will be more polished.

On another note (and far from the pieces of art usually discussed here..):
I am traveling soon and do not want to take my board, as it does not fit normal luggage (and I have my family, so reduced luggage allowance for kite stuff :-/). I fit a 70cm mast, wing, fuselage, kites etc all in a normal suitcase so my thought was just to go to the hardware shop at my holiday destination and buy a piece of wood, have it cut to shape (I will make a paper template) and screw my mast on. Should not be too expensive and if I put a bit of varnish or boat coating and anti slip, it should last the few weeks of my holiday. Greg the kitefoiler seems to ride such a "handcrafted" board..
Does anybody have experience with such an approach? Tips ?

Tomw idea makes more sense. Or even go low tech foam to keep it light but small. Depends if you have any previous skills with composites.

Yes, I thought about it but my building skills are limited, I have no real idea how to make the two parts hold together. I am surely not able to build this complex fitting system they have for split TTs (I do not have any advanced tools). Thats why I thought a piece of wood would do it :-? But open to suggestions if anybody has an "easy" solution on how to make the split work. Thanks!!

Quite,

Make an outline template from thick paper.
Let's say you want a 100cm board.
Take a piece of wood (1/2" - 10 mm plywood) 70cm long and cut out the rear part with tail, nose will be not included.
Do the same with 2nd 70cm and cut out including nose, not including tail.
Now temporarily screw the 2 parts together with tail part on top. I'd use flat head screws from top and unlock nuts on the bottom, 6-8 screws in M5 size. Shape rails, perhaps put som Shape on front edge of top part.
Drill for mast attachment. Mast will only attach to one thickness at tail. There's a risk it will be weak at where front part starts. Might need some reinforcement.
Take apart and glass it up or cover in varnish /paint/epoxy.
Pack it in your luggage and screw it together at destination.

Rainy day here.
Balsa board blank. The hollow parts didn't work, collapsed under vacuum. Had to fill them in..
I heard this cracking sound and the 7mm balsa was collapsing into the void. I was kinda " duh! You idiot" ...

I reckon go for it. Don't overthink it. Get a piece of wood that is thick and strong enough and cut to size. If you need a bit of extra strength or stiffness, you can throw on a layer of glass or carbon strips, or both. Then drill some holes, and bolt through, with some big washers to spread the load. Or use t-nuts with prongs. A smaller board of around 80 - 85 cm, small enough to get in normal luggage, will be a little tricky to get going, but definitely once you're riding, will be fine. Make sure that overall you have enough bouyancy that the whole setup floats.
