My yesterdays core build:

Did not use a vacuum so strips did not bond evenly. It's ok, a PU cures fast and glassing today:

Built this split pocket board. 110x47. Balsa core and carbon laminate. 3kg. Tested it today and it works great. My front foot is just behind the split on deck as I designed it.
Rides just like my other pockets.
Now we need travel bans lifted to make use of it.

First experiment with carbon fiber cloth and vacuum bagging working well. Lots of imperfections but a good learning experience.

105cm x 38cm
Cheap 2cm EPS sandwiched between 3mm Baltic birch ply.
Wrapped in 600g carbon fiber with small amount of reinforcement at plate.
Adhesive-backed cork Shelf liner for deck pad.

Very stiff. 2.5kg. Not as light as could be due to use of plywood, but only half the weight of my old full ply board.

Feels great! Super responsive compared to my old board. Was worried it was too small or narrow but worked well for a powered session in 20 knots.

Hi, looks really good! Which carbon weight / layup did you use? Just asking because I´m planning something quite similar in 15mm Balsa and splittable too.

Greets,
Micha

I used one layer of 200g twill cf and several 150mm wide strips of 100g uni directional Cf on top and bottom. Balsa is stiff but has poor tensile strength.
Another challenge with balsa is if you get a leak it sucks in water fast and balsa breaks down when has gotten wet.
I make mine with 3 layers of balsa v- bagged onto rocker form.

Try using peel ply non slip deck. And you could use 3mm HD foam on deck only and leave bottom only eps. Add extra carbon at mast plate.

Thanks for information! So I think my plan using 300g/sq m triaxial Carbon with some additional 0 deg. reinforcements at foil mount and inserts @15mm thickness is not so bad. I know about the problem with leak laminate and balsa but on the other hand I´m waiting for about four years now for this to happen.
I´m using the BCore QX balsa cores from bcomp.ch
It´s a quadraxial orientated balsa construction. With about 190-210 grams per liter not super light as foam but it works for low volume boards up 6 liters or so. Paulownia would be an option for a small pocket board, but mine will be a bit larger; 1.32 x 0.475m

Regards
Micha

How do you get rocker with a 15 mm B core QX ?
