Tips on making pig tails ?

Postby ap888 » Sun Feb 17, 2019 7:30 am

Anyone got tips on making pig tails regular size that are from 12-20cm loop to loop and loop to knot...long ones are easy but want to make smaller regular size ones how much to sew because the bury would be 15-18cm for a 3mm Dyneema looks like they are stitched up quite a bit does one need a sewing machine to make good pigtails...hand sewing should be fine right :?:

Already thought about folding line over and tie 8 knot in it but want to make real pigtails :thumb:

Short spliced pigtails rely entirely on the strength of the sewing as the splices are way too short to hold any load. A decent sewing machine and strong quality polyester threads are a must.
Even then I personally don't like to go below 150mm total length for my pigtails on 3mm Dyneema.

If you definitely need a short pigtail, the folded ones with a locked knot are stronger. Melting the loose ends with a small flame into a blob is a good way to prevent the knot from slipping.

What about using brummel lock splices? While the burying still is a very good idea I think the locking holds most of the load.

Not sure the "bury 50x diameter"-"rule" applies.

I make my pigtails using the “Locked Brummel Splice" method and then run it through my sewing machine “belt and braces” approach.
Hand stitching would be fine if you don’t have access to a sewing machine.
I use Liros D Pro 01505 3mm (950kg) line with Heminway & Bartlett sewing thread.

I do a regular bury splice and sew it by hand. I do about 20 - 30 stitches. Do this for my depower line and bridle replacements. I've made a few pig-tails like this also, with them, if they are short I may bury the tail, then figure of 8 knot so the buried tail is part of the line I knot.

Not sure how safe all of that is, not had anything come lose yet!
