5th line low V convert to high V (North)

Postby kjorn » Fri Mar 08, 2019 1:38 am

Hey peeps,

Got a 5th line bar with a low V, need to change it to a high V for a North Rebel 8m.

The V needs to move to 13m below the kite. I have an oval O ring that I was going to attach to the 5th line, then run my two front lines through it thus making a high V.

How should I attach the ring to the line? Larks head? Tie a pig tail to the O ring, attach the pig tail to the line? Can you think of any issues with this idea?

Cheers,

kjorn

EDIT: did some searching and found these images that may inspire a better solution :)

The same way Fone moves its Y north does too. On a wake bar you use a SS ring to block a stopper ball. Works fine. I would go for it.

Watch our for wear tho.

Why? Rebel like all kites fly with low V. Correct backline/frontline adjustment (in which that kind of ring like in pictures affects) and line length itself are much more important than front line split location. Only exception is if this point is too close to the kite (too high V), then it will distort kite shape and very probably makes it fly bad.

Question isn't if kite flies better with high V but if it tolerates high V.

Img2096 ring is stupid, it will weaken that line considerably. It is a front line, a power line, FFS

Wait ... what? Rebel flys better with a low V?

How did you know this?

Kjorn the only way to know for sure is to try it. Go ahead and do that lark's head thing on a stainless steel ring try both ways see how it works.

absolutely high.
if you need the precise measurement, tomorrow I measure it.
rebel until 2017, after flying also with 4-line bar.

Idea that there would be some optimal V height in which kite flies best is quite stupid. AFAIK North has used same high V bar for different sized kites, both small and large - and now Rebel can be flied both 5 or 4 line. LOL, these things are not at all critical to how kite flies.

However some people do not understand that same line going straight from the bar to the kite (low V) is not functionally of same length than if it goes via bend (high V). Back lines and 5-line go always straight.

V height is not an issue but line lengths (related to each other) can be.

In my 5 line kites there is an easy possibility to adjust 5-line length, how loaded it is. Frontline/backline length adjustment should be familiar to every kiter.

I disagree with this. If you have flown the Naish Torch you will find the "V" split can have a big difference on the whole kite behaviour. For the original question, I would hand stitch the lines together with a strong nylon thread at the "V" point you need (you will need to stretch them out and mark well to make sure they are both equal)

Which size Torch do you mean? You realize same V height is different thing for 5m kite than it is to 14m kite.

I don't disagree using that ring at known distance. It is correct - not by its height but because it makes line lengths right.
