DIY HF Mast Screws Connection?

Postby hcohen2018 » Fri Jun 21, 2019 6:21 am

Hi, designing my first build for a HF board.
How do you reccommend to go about the mast connection? Its a standard plate.

I don't need rails and would simple do a thru holes but should I put the nut washer on deck? It looks very uncomfortable, using a flat head from deck and a washer nut at the foil?

Besides from drilling a 20mm hole, fill with epoxy and drill again for reinforcment, what else should I do the strengthen the connection?

Thanks you

Pics say more than words
Inserts: http://kitefoil.forumactif.org/t1781-po ... vec-embase
Put these Inserts into this: http://kitefoil.forumactif.org/t7787-no ... ard-112x45
Make the wooden Stringer 60-70cm long, until past your frontfoot
To install the Inserts into the wooden frame ensures the right position of 90mmx160/165mm

Terrific, so just to make sure I understood (since google translated the French to me). You've used the top screws to hold everything in place with the dimensions top plate, once the epoxy has cured you removed the plate and mount the top screws to be there.

from the bottom you now have the hex insert hole, what do you do then? I did not understood the bottom setup.

Thank you.

Wasn't me. Just an example. Make sure bottom and decklaminate have a solid connection with wood and Epoxy
mixed with cotton to bed in the inserts. Laminat some patches of carbon in different sizes on the bottom. Fill the inserts with wax and make a template to find the holes for carefully drilling .
Yes, i think you got it right with this method
Have fun and show us some pics

Actually, If this is my first build and I'm trying not to screw things :)
If I just tap the mast plat for a screw? its currently designed for a flat head m8 screw, but If i drill it to M12 and tap it, then simply run a long flat head screw from the top?
of course I would do a drill of 20mm filled with epoxy before.

this would be like the Cabrinha Double Agent plate

I have built 1 very simple wood board (KISS) using t nuts as inserts, so I’m no expert, but here’s what I did:

Make template of base plate
Laminate the board
Drill out oversized holes in the board to fit template
Tape off holes on deck and fill with epoxy and filler
Fill coat
Drill out epoxy chambers to correct size again using template
Tape off holes on deck, and set t nuts in holes
Fill with epoxy and filler only up to height of t nut chamber and put screws in t nuts through template to make sure it is straight

The benefit of doing it this way is that the deck is clean and you can see if there is a problem with the insert.

There are other threads on this. Just use the search function.

Good luck!

Why not use stainless M8 t-nuts? They’re cheap

I recently converted a surfboard to a foilboard, added stringers with brass barrel nuts.

I reinforced my board with stringers that went from the tail to about 30cm past the connection point. Then I drilled oversized holes, filled with epoxy/carbon mix. Then re-drilled at M8. I run a bolt through the board and foil base plate, there is a nut at the bottom. So from the top:

Bolt head (hex)
Steel washer (30mm)
Nylon washer (30mm)
Board
Foil plate
Steel washer 20mm
Nut

I put some cord deck padding on which helps reduce the height that the washers poke up a bit. But they are fine to stand on. I find them useful because I can feel with my back foot if it's in the wrong place, I tend to stand just behind the washers.
