Hydrofoil front wing design

Postby kjorn » Sun Jun 30, 2019 12:51 pm

Hi,

I'm going to try and 3D print something similar to the slingshot glide space skate, not sure what profile to use (I'm aiming for 2.5 degrees positive AoA - then shim to 3.5 if needed) any advice or thoughts? I want super fun, easy to carve, easy to learn new things on, get me through the gusts and lulls.

Space skate is 1,500cm area, I prob won't go that large, my current front wing is 600 sq cm, so maybe around 900 to 1,000 sq cm?

Few notes:
- For kitefoiling at 200lbs the 1000 sq.cm is probably as big as you need to cover both lightwind and regular freeride.
- 20mm profile thickness of 683s as opposed to 25mm of 633 allows to fly faster
- swept back, arrowhead leading edge shape will allow to avoid seaweed collecting on the wing
- higher AR gets you more stable setup - infinity 76 is about same area as H4 space skate but is a better wing

Very interesting. I didn't understand your profile comments, could you link to the profiles you mean, please :)

I'm struggling with my turns and switching my feet. Turning feels sluggish. And I'm so crap at switching my feet around. Do you think the gull-wing shape promotes a bit of agile-turning?

Basically I was saying the 20mm profile thickness is just enough for universal kitefoil wing with very decent lowend.

I think gull-wing shape doesn’t make much difference, and it’s rather more important wing features like area, profile thickness and AR. Maybe winglets have a bit of effect too.

As of turns - fly the kite, that’s the key.
