I'm about to buy gong foil, and I have an old twintip board (cabrinha xcaliber). Would it be a bad idea to drill holes and attach foil to it? Haven't seen any twintip boards with foils
Is it strong and stiff enough or would it need some extra layers of carbon or glass fiber? Or some extra plate to distribute foil load to wider area

We do it all the time at our spot, me and a couple of fellas. I've always picked a stiff old twintip. Here is an old build from 2017:

Some twin tips are pretty soft. As mentioned, I would look for wood core stiff boards. I think the Xcalibur is wood core and generally one of their stiffer freestyle/wakestyle boards. Drill and seal with epoxy when you put the stainless T nuts in.

Always a good idea to check if the board will float your foil first.

If it flexes - don’t use it. If the twintip is like Liquid Force Proof which has zero flex - it should work
For a foil pretty much any solid, stuff board would work as long as it doesn’t drown with the foil

Twintip is a little bit flexible, but I didn't notice any problems with it in use.


Had to build a wooden adapter plate between the foil and board, because board bottom isn't flat enough.

It might work but why do it? It is going to flex like crazy it won't be pleasant it won't have much buoyancy it will be really hard to learn to switch your feet why not get a proper board!

maybe i just got sensitive girly feet... but i'm certain i could not ride one of these very long

I just wanted to test would it work, and when traveling, I can take foil and only one board and use it as a twintip too. Sure it flexes more than many other boards but I didn't feel it flexing when foiling. Or at least it wasn't a problem. I tried also a stiffer board (which was made for foiling) but didn't feel it any better, it was just bigger.
I don't trust in buoyancy when doing transitions With a 1500cm^2 foil like that gong, I can almost stop and it keeps the board in air

"one of these very long" ? it's 135 cm long. Sure I could cut 10 cm from back off but then I couldn't use it as twintip board without foil.

very long= a very long time.

i've tested nobile's twintip splitboard...
i rode barefoot, btw.. sex wax fixed the issue of back foot wanting to slip.. didnt try wearing footies or something on feet
imo, long boards with no volume are much easier to ride on a foil than short boards.
with nobile's board on a surf wing.. it floats on the side. and with curvature touchdowns didnt equal having to water start (like with my normal 85cm no volume board)

i really like the idea....as long as the rider accepts more of a pretty good twin tip ...that give the convenience of attaching your foil to...too.

old style twintype is better because have more volume, depend on wing is floating or no, also old boards stiff enough
