Embedding T nuts for straps, foil?

Postby Jyoder » Thu Jan 16, 2020 3:18 pm

Building a foilboard for jumping with straps.

What’s the best way to anchor footstrap T nuts in a DIY foilboard with some volume? Embed them in an epoxy hockey puck under the glass/carbon? How deep is enough, or can the end of the nut be right up against the laminate? If I make a row of them to allow for adjustment that makes for a lot of epoxy.

I’ve bolted through the whole board on a low volume board but with a volume board the bolt would be very long.

Same questions about the foil mount. Can I get away with not connecting bolts to the top skin?

You could do it that way or a into a similar sided slab of wood. Bamboo works well.

Try and get 316 in there. 304 will corrode over time. In a salt water enviroment

Foil mount is best to go through the board. This makes bottom and top surfaces of the board tied together for much more strength. Then board can take some foil hits to the ground without braking.

If you want row of inserts you can embed them in a piece of wood and then embed it under the surface lamination. Stronger and less fuss and use of epoxy compared to if done them separately.

Some more laminate should be used on loaded areas of the board of course.

I would also suggest using the standard 5-hole footstrap inserts, they will be mush lighter than metal t-nuts. If you are not planning very frequent footstrap position changes they will work as well. Also much easier to put into your board.
