Out of interest, do you reckon you even need a spreader for foiling? It would be really easy to set up a rope slider if there was no spreader at all, just tie the rope to one end and have a small carabiner on the other.

Yes. It stops the sides of the harness from crushing your kidneys when the kite pulls.
