Beta test - online kite design software

Postby decay » Sun Apr 19, 2020 2:53 pm

Hi Guys,

CV-19 lock down has given me a chance to dive back into some parametric kite design code I wrote a few years ago.

I've managed to get a basic but usable version of it working via a web portal feel free to jump on and have a play if these things interest you:
Image 20200419003.png
https://app.shapediver.com/m/200419-inf ... e-design-4

None of the controls are in any sort of order, and labels might be a bit little hard to decode - it was written by me for me after all.

Currently you can download an OBJ file or email me with the full design file - I'll get back to you if/when I get a chance.

Cheers

DK

More progress in the last few days

Now have the ability to upload custom foil profiles - DM me for sample/details

Inflated and canopy are now different colours and there is the ability to switch between render and wireframe views.

Also you can enable/disable the flat panel preview.

I played with it for a while and noticed the lack of airfoil selection, also adjusting thickness (camber) of it should be necessary. Good to hear from improvements.

I saw only three point bridle, four and/or five point should be there IMO.

Seam allowances, what units are they? I wasn't able to move struts how I wanted, also strut segment count remained same. Center profile hold (or morphing) is unclear to me, what does that value mean? Number of panels? Then what is wingtip airfoil?

Built in AoA, coning? How much, where, where to adjust? Canopy curve amount, just to eyeball it?

I couldn't save a design, how does it happen?

For me this kind of program is useful only after practically everything is under control, before that it is difficult to move forward. Very probably a lot of the above is because of my lack of skill to use the program (sorry about that) but it would be nice to have some or better description and guidance for it. Some proven values to certain parameters could also be there, when it is possible. Program is quite slow to react after changing parameters but its ok.

However this looks very interesting and promising program, thanks :thumb: I'm going to practice it some more to get more familiar with it

Hi mate,

Best way to answer ALL of what you are asking for is - "its on the to-do list".

Not even sure where this is going, just sharing the stoke of getting it working.

I've successfully built a couple of kites from the under lying source code - but due to a bunch of limitations this online version is massively cut down - however I do believe it will still output files that will assemble to a kite.

Keep watching - it may progress to be something, or it could die once CV-19 lets me back to the beach!

I was actually just working on the double cascade, 4 point bridle code this evening:

I'll upload it as soon as the mess I made in the source code is all cleaned up.

Cheers

OK thanks! I can control struts now and just by trying what happens this seems to work out quite well

Maximum computation time or smthg exceeded when I adjusted LE sweep. My precious design is now vanished for ever :?: :!:

thanks mate, I'm restricted to total computation on this online service, and some combos of settings may crash into that, hitting refresh might get the design back.

I'm thinking of doing a video walking thru a design, that might explain how to get a successful design thru the system.

Cheers

Hey Kitexpert,

Can you give me a sketch of the 5 point bridle you would like? Simple arch or something else?

Cheers

Thanks Kiteexpert - not a problem to sort that out - I'll put that on the list

This evenings update is here:

https://app.shapediver.com/m/kite-desig ... witching-7

Been looking at calculation time and have cut a number of things back/out to aid stability.

As part of this 2D panel creation is now a menu item:

Image 20200421005.png
As you'll also see above I've added a heads up display with some basic data - more to be added later

Finally, as a 'catch me' you'll now get a warning if you try to add too many struts to a design:

Cheers
