Kite Sewing Needles

Postby clopez1976 » Fri Apr 24, 2020 11:02 am

Hi Guys.
I just want to ask, is someone knows what type of kite sewing needles the Brand use to fabric Kites. I'm talking about needles for industrial sewing machines. For example Sharp, Ballpoint, or Universal. All the information that you can give me, I´ll be grateful...
Thanks a lot and good winds

I'd search sailmaking needles. Or email a friendly loft? Let me know what you find - I know 2 sailmakers and can ask if you come up empty.

I use 80 on ripstop, 90-100 on ripstop/dacron, 110 dacron/dacron, 120 dacron/dacron/light webbing, 125 dacron/dacron/heavy webbing.

I used to repair embrodery machine, and for light nylon type fabric, "shape needles / microtex".
Why, you dont want the needle to break a wire in the thread
All threads are made from multiple wires twisted together, regardless of the twist type of thread ( S or Z)
and the fact that this kind of needle have a smaller diameter, aid if you make a mistake, by not leaving a big hole in the fabric
for heavier nylon fabric also sharpe needles, same consern, but you may go slower in speed when sewning

Universal (R/RG for Groz Beckett, R/RRT for Schmetz)
Sharp (RS, SPI) work well, but don't last long on such dense woven and stiff fabrics.

Needle size is first determined by the thread size, but above guide from Marlboroughman is spot on and the sailrite link is very helpful.

There are special needles like the Serv7/Schmetz and SAN5/GrozBeckert, allowing use of thicker thread (or thinner needle), but I guess you won't be sewing hundreds of kites

S twist would be of huge help for what you are trying to explain above. But such threads are very rare, believe me. For special industrial and automotive applications.

Zigzag seams untwist the standard Z-twist threads, that's the main reason sailmakers threads are bonded - even untwisted, the single yarns (wires as you call them) won't split open so the looper hook catches only one.

Without getting too scientific I pick universal needles because I want it to push itself between the fibre without cutting it. That's my theory.

Sorry for the confusion, even I reading myself,.... hmmm not great...
had to be written ; .... "Why, you dont want the needle to break a wire in the fabric".....
regardless of the needle manufactuer, best way is to try then, 'sharpe needle point'

I'd argue with both of you. As regards dacron, there is very little chance not to break yarns when sewing with 120 needle or thicker. If you somehow (sharp point, low speed, finer needle) manage to do it, you then cause more displacement puckering, which results in higher shrinkage of the seam.
On the LE closing seam this might result in closing the arch of the LE.
My personal opinion is that 'controlled breaking' of the fabric yarns is the best option.

I'm not a professional, but I believe you should be well-prepared. As it's extremely difficult not to break the materials while sewing. So, do you have an industrial sewing machine or something like this?
