Custom line winder for carbon bars

Postby br44 » Thu May 14, 2020 5:01 pm

I’ve been using a winder improvised from a former plastic line winder, cut up in two and parts attached with bungee. Insert them in the bar ends, wind up the lines. Works well, but you’d better not lose it.

Yesterday I stumbled upon another solution: carabiners. Find a way to keep the gates open when winding and unwinding: nearby leader line, elastic bands, finger, some rust, etc. Advantages:
- Carabiners can be clipped to your PFD or harness, so you can’t lose them and have them handy everywhere. Even for water rescue (maybe make them floating).
- Compact setup - does not lengthen the bar. Good for hiking
- Once the gates are closed, the lines are secure and cannot slip out.

Some hooks could work well too, as long as they cannot be lost or misplaced.

Those things are great for catching lines and causing death loops.

I don’t think he meant to ride with them, Just for winding/unwinding lines on the beach? Then remove while on the water.

The "problem" with not be able to wind up the lines on a super clean bar is one of the things that stopped med from make my own carbon bar. That and the "problem" with manufacture a center hole that does not make the bar weaker so it brakes or have unnecessary wear on the lines.

At least the winding up "problem" is solved thanks to br44.

Well he is writing he want to clip it to the harness or PFD....bad idea to store them in that way... That could unlikely but not impossibly cause a deathloop by catching a line... Nice idea for winding....

It would be far simpler to stick ends on the bar. You could even use temporary thin bits of pipe you just side in to wind onto.

Putting a low friction ring on the side of the bar is an easy way to do it.
