Surfr + burner phone = Poor Man's Woo

Postby evpa1g » Wed Jul 01, 2020 3:04 pm

I was curious to try out the Surfr app, but didn't want to risk my regular phone. Got https://www.ebay.com/itm/Tracfone-Moto- ... 3873320845 for $40 (it's now $50), and it works great. It was the cheapest new phone I could find with the right sensors (gyro + accelerometer).

I run the app on airplane mode so it doesn't use data and minimizes battery use. So far I get about 10% per hour of use, so theoretically 10 hours before needing a recharge.

A cheap soft phone waterproof bag + 3M VHB double-sided tape holds it on fine. Surfr is coming out with its own case as well.

Thats cool.

Anyone have insight as to how the readings would differ if the phone were just worn on your person vs on the board ?

It's mentioned in their FAQs. https://www.thesurfr.app/#1590794539905-6bce2de6-2b8b

It seems that it's less accurate.

It works. It tracks jumps and distance. I haven't used a Woo, so can't comment on the UI differences.

The developer is working hard to improve the app too (and supposedly they're more accurate than Woo, based on their tests).

Cannot be more or less accurate than a woo...both never did accuracy test....but more cheap and more battery time can be a good plus ..time to change phone...

Is this bag really waterproof? Have you tested?

Have you read their tests by yourself before saying something like that?
If they use a 7M & 11M pole and the app indicates 7m & 11M then what is not accurate about that?

I don't want to bad mouth Woo, but to me it seems like Surfr is taking accuracy "more seriously". Not sure how accurate is realistic to expect in the end with the hardware available, but I do like Surfr's approach. Hopefully that might trigger Woo to get better as well (even if it feels like Surfr got a shot at completely taking over the market if it works as well as it looks).

Whatever happens I do like how this is developing.

I really like the idea of having a live view of the jump height with a view in a transparent case, something Woo doesn't offer.
