Home made wings 3m and 4.6m

Postby nemoz » Mon Aug 10, 2020 8:28 am

Nothing special and nothing new, I built in wings for my next trip to Greece, 3m with handles and 4.6m with micro booms, I copied the idea from Hotwing Hawaii. I already tested the 3m and it worked pretty well. I got the custom bladders from Gigi Drtuba, as always the best quality from him.

dude you're intense - taking DIY to the next level. What sort of sewing machine did you use? How did you get the tubes the right size and thing symmetrical? Do you have serious sewing/mfg experience?

I bought a used singer machine 3232 for 20 euros during covid quarantine, was not working properly, I disassembled it and it had multiple problems of tensioning, hook timing and needle height, I found all the how to videos on youtube (I supposed the old owner disassembled it for some reason and reassembled it not correctly). I had no sewing experience or at least just the basic. The first blue 4,6 one is not perfectly symmetrical one tip has higher AOA than the other, the white dacron one is way way better, i will rebuilt the 4,6 after my holiday in Greece. I designed it with Surfplan and i printed it on A0 paper size for 16€ https://www.surfplan.com.au/sp/downloads/index.aspx.
If you follow the sewing lines correctly it will be simmetrycal.
For the bladders you can custom order them from https://drtuba.eu/product/dacron-adhesive-tape. You can ask to Gigi on the forum.
The only tips I can give you is to use needle for leather(this will help you to not breaking the polietilene thread), a good 9mm 3m double side tape (to pre align all the fabric parts), and to spray the thread in the spools with wd40 (this will prevent thread to stick on the needle with the glue from the 3m tape). I would love to have this tips in advance.

How cool is that? Well done and nice designs. Imagine the pleasure when you can ride your own wings. Congratulations. Thanks for sharing.

I had extra time on my hands also and converted a 2012 as rally 8m to a wing.
I cut out the end struts ,approx 2 panels each and re sewed it all together.
Took the bladder, removed the 2 valves and patched over the hole.
I used heavy rope and sewed it on the main strut for handles.
There has been a lack of wind so I haven't tried it yet.
I want to use it with my MTN board skimming on the beach.
Possible use it with my bike.

Sort of hoping I may be able to do something like this. I have an older North Rebel 10M that I wrecked (landed on a roof...oops). The bladder and struts are fine, I just tore the canopy all over. I think there is enough material there to do what you're describing.

Any way you could post pictures?

Thanks to the OP for the explanations and tips. I actually have a couple of simple machines and some basic sewing experience already so this may be in the real of possible. Time is the most limiting factor...

Hi.

did you draw the wings in the hobby version of the surfplan how did you get it? I also made several wing designs but I still haven't built my own and posted and another forum I don't know if you saw it.

you can share your files of these versions of wing .eu I can share mine too!
