DIY Quick release

Anyone know where I can source the Pin to make a Quick release similar to the BRM ?

Also I assume that I can use a cheap light duty plastic ball similar to https://www.amazon.com/Kotap-BB-6B-Bung ... 166&sr=8-6?

Mine were salvaged from old cabrinha leashes, but there must be a better source. Cab moved away from them ages ago. Hopefully someone knows what they are called.

They were like gold for a while but BRM are still using em so they are still out there somewhere.

Any plastic ball the appropriate size will do.

Search for “parrel bead” and “316 stainless 3mm eye end”

Closest you will get without huge effort or wasting $$$.
Have used a setup based on this >100 times over 4 years.
Numerous examples of build on kf etc.

Amazon is ok but best to get stuff meant for rigging/sailing.

Parts for light duty tarps etc may or may not be good.

A parrel bead of nylon will just need 3mm cross drilling for bungy and reaming to fit your rope/pin assembly...

I have the CCS bar from BRM and just yesterday i completely removed the QR. In 4 years of kiting with the Cloud kites (foiling and waves in rough conditions) I never found myself even thinking about QR, the bar simply has such a huge throw so simply letting go of the bar means the kite (any kite) will depower so much.

And now when replacing the depower lines I do not need to make identical lines, I can just make one in roughly the same length and trim the back lines accordingly.


I'm not really recommending ditching the QR, I'm just offering a different perspective.

If you're referring to the QR for the complete disconnection then you can try and make something similar with a stainless eye bolt, just grind the threads and it can be used the exact same way

Don't use cheap plastic balls for anything that bears load and/or is safety critical. I bought a bunch of those like the ones you linked on amazon and they break in various ways. The ones you get from a typical chandler are much much better - so don't compromise on those.

I have also used a stainless eye bolt. One issue was that the eye is a bit big but this is OK if you are connecting it to a big enough ring. I did not grind the threads off but covered them with epoxy paste to fill the threads then I sanded smooth. Worked well and I think this might be easier than grinding the threads.

They've moved back to them, haven't they? haven't seen a new (2019+...?) bar in the flesh though...

Better bet is a “swage eye terminal” (saves dealing with the threads)

2.5mm is plenty strong enough.

Have used a swage eye terminal before an they generally are not levered as there is no offset to the eye. They also don't have the small cross pieces that seat the head of the proper piece on the edge of the SS ring it works with. Both the offset and the cross pieces ensure that load is taken by the line and not the pin as well as minimizing bulk within the SS ring allowing for two of them to be used in opposition on the same SS ring. It's hard to get a swage eye terminal with the hole adequately sized without the pin being too thick. Needed modification to end up as an acceptable unit. Reaming both the whole and cutting down length. Still wasn't happy with it. I literally tracked down helpful Cabrinha retailers asking if they had any old or used leashes with this pin that I could purchase. Eventually sourced three. They are all in current use.

The ideal hardware exists and is in use. Somebody must know a bit about how and where BRM and Cabrinha source(d) them.
