Cut down slingshot stabilizer?

Postby t_huebs » Thu Feb 11, 2021 10:36 pm

I searched here and a few other places and got nothing. Has anyone ever done it? Do you know if/where there is core?

Watching folks in the surf foil world really tweaking things with tails/stabilizers and how Armstrong setup has the "chop shop" tail option I'm wondering if it would be worth playing with the standard Slingshot 42cm setup. I have three of them and one is pretty beat up so I'm thinking it might be a sacrificial lamb.

Are you talking about Hoverglide 42cm stabilizer or 420 GW race stabilizer?

I think the first is basic setup and nobody spends time playing with it besides buying an additional wing or mast.

In the second you might have half an inch of thin material before you see innards, but I suggest restoring the winglets if you damaged them.

Again, if it’s Hoverglide I’d be curious what wing/mast you ride with it and what are you trying to achieve.

Hoverglide 42cm.

After initial learning curve I played around with what I liked for relatively confined flat water venues, I didn’t want to go extra fast because I’d run out of room quickly. Settled on H2/gamma wing after using H5/timecode and H4/spaceskate. Some shorter masts for inside reef stuff but generally 24-28in range.

Now in a different location with more open water so the 28in mast is as short as I’ll be and with more room I’m wondering what happens if I reduce a bit of drag and can probably deal with less stability from chopping the wingtips off.

Mainly it’s winter and playing with gear is keeping the mind engaged and like I said I have 3 so I don’t really care if I wreck my most beat up tail.

The Hoverglide wings are really durable as long as they hold together and I heard they’re made way differently compared to your usual carbon wing.
Chopping wingtips off won’t change much - using thinner and narrower (race) stabilizer would make real difference. But then you probably be entering world of better carbon setups.

Yep, Armstrong setup onhand to get sorted once it warms up. Just another reason to play with the old hoverglide stuff.

As for made differently, I might find out if I cut into it. I recall folks have seen edges of front wings come apart on some early 2019 wings I think, from when they transitioned to the black carbon with orange edge color scheme. I don't know how earlier/later wings are laid up but I think that implies molded halves over a foam core and glued together. As a comparison, Armstrong says they have about 20 layers of carbon around the leading edge.
