advise on sandwich construction - wingboard

Postby Frankieboy » Thu Apr 08, 2021 10:27 am

I consider building a new 110L wingboard but need it to be very light @5kg

EPS 15kg/m3 so 1,65kg
3mm PVC
I will try to have the foil boxes + reinforcement and connection to the deck at 700gr maximum
No straps

The question is what to use for this sandwich construction:

I know a few people using 120gr under and 160gr over

I used 200gr under / 200gr over (carbon) on a board but it is too heavy for my liking

What about 80gr (2,5oz) glass fiber under and 120gr (4oz) carbon over + extra patches around box and under the pad? I could have something equivalent to 200gr cloth under the feet and box with a much lighter nose (swing weight!)
Is this too risky?

You can kind of calculate the weight before you start with the different weight glasses. Volume of polystryrene/ density Area of glass.. weight.. ideal glass to resin weight ratios are published some places.. I used to know off top of my head.. forgot + accessories..

Chuck it all in a spread sheet and you can actually guess pretty well what any board is using. Sometimes you can use a super bright 500w light in a dark room and see through boards, or see how much carbon .. like an X-ray! Leave it against board for long and it will start to burn/melt board.

yes I made a speadsheet and validate it with the 53L board I am building right now. Up to now (pvc with accessories and rails) it is quite accurate.
I included (and weighted) rails with boxe and connection to deck, accessories, EPS, PVC, carbon layers, resin and resin/microballoon/silice-mixture or whatever the name I put on EPS and PVC before laminating. Also minimalistic finish (paint & glassing)
For a 110L board I get to 5,1kg with 80gr / 125gr sandwich and a total of 0,5m2 patches on bottom and same on deck.
Just wondering if it would be strong enough compared to 120/160gr or the 200/200gr I am building

Quite ambitious, but not impossible.

Check these boxes and see if you can make such:

A friend made similar ones few years ago and got them down to ~50 grams (each) at 8" length.

I'm also building a freeride hydrofoil board very similar to the groove skate.
measures 125cm, 46cm thick 5cm.
I'll put the photos tomorrow that I split it from the void I made to glue the sandwich.
core is eps 25kg / m3, 6mm thick sandwich, i could make deck splo sandwich and hull.
no the side rails, it was too thick to make it turn.
I wet the core with epoxy resin and Micro spheres, then resin on 120gr glass fabric and spread on the bread.
then wet the pvc and spread on the glass and core.
my question is: the resin to glue everything still weighs. there is no other lighter material to be able to do it and not waste resin?
finished everything, 1 or 2 layers of 200gr plain carbon fabric, deck and hull?
