Made a quick mold in leftover foam, waxed the thing, and layed up some fiberglass

I started to 3D print some out of flexible tpu. The idea being to make something that a line would not catch and flex just enough. I never finished the project. I got distracted.

That's a good idea! How about shaping it like this, so a line can't get stuck?
The upper half of the hook can be made more flexible, not sure though if that's really necessary.

I design and 3D print mine and cover them with eva foam. They break quite often tho... but I guess it's better than the board or an ankle breaking...

Very good design from my point of view. Have you tried to print it with right/left side facing down to the buildplate? Might increase the break-load, depending on which filament type you´re using for this. But will need support structure then when printing of course.

Sure, I initially designed them so that they would be printed right/left side facing down to the plate and not need any supports, but they were breaking anyway... They usually broke around the mounting screws. Current orientation, or printing them with supports as they would stand on the board seems to make the area around the screws stronger, and they last longer.

I have built a few of them. I did as was suggested and cut up a cutting board into strips. Then I used a heat gun to heat the plastic where I wanted it bent. I heated it on both sides. Once it started to get warm I put light pressure on it and bent it very slowly. I tried doing it once with a torch and it just ended up snapping. When it was bent the way I wanted it I drilled two holes and screwed it to my board. I didn't put any padding around it as I wear boots. I haven't been able to break it.
Likewise. It is annoying that the store bought ones break so easy for how expensive they are. BUT: in making these diy semi-indestructible ones, you realize that having them designed to break under substantial load is a positive safety feature. Better it breaks before your leg. Or if it catches a kite line, it breaks after the first death loop surge.
Someone else at some point posted about making them with crushed PVC pipe.

I make them from plastic chopping board, 1,5$ for three hooks. Heet&bend. Sew cover from old wetsuit. Or use it without cover, if im in boots. Holds for a season till some hard crash

Thank you so much for all the suggestions! That really helps!
I wish any stores were open and I could finally buy a cutting board aka foot hook.
