Twin Tip Carbon Fiber Repair

Postby daspi » Sat Jun 12, 2021 3:28 pm

Did my first carbon fiber repair on a trashed Duotone Textreme. I'm happy with the repair but contemplating how to finish it off. I did apply a hot coat to seal in the weave structure. Should I cover it with paint or just leave as is? The base layer is some sort of plastic film and won't hold epoxy. Had to grind through it so the carbon expoy laminate would hold. Maybe some paint would stick to it but really feel I don't want to paint the whole board.
Looking for input from fellow repair guys. How would you finish a repair like this?

I have heard that PTEX Candles are good for patching the bottom plastic coat. If memory serves the prime use is ski repair. Have yet to try it myself, may or may not be worth a look………..not sure about a large area….

PS I like plummets philosophy below of just ride it, I think he is on the money!

That's a lot of carbon. You probably have stiffened the bijesus out of it with that lay up......

As far as finishing is concerned. Sand it and ride it. Its a piece of shit anyway. Why bother with anything else?

LOL, no not a lot of carbon. Just replaced what was removed. One layer only. Damage was down to the wood and had to remove where it delaminated and rebuilt from wood up. Heel edge was ground off partially to the core as well. Sanded most carbon off and replaced with new. All in all hardly added any weight. Flex seems good. Just rode it last night and it performed as it should. Really happy with it.

I kind of agree, I think I will just leave the repair exposed. Might give it another coat of epoxy once it starts to show scratches. Everything else would just add weight.

I feel it was well worth the repair as it is after all a $1100 board. $30 materials and a few hours of work. Learned something too. :)

Would as well say just sand it. But don´t damage the fibre layer(s) when sanding. Just the edges where the fibre comes out.
