Stick for a DIY Bar

Postby 1234567Simon » Thu Jan 20, 2022 6:55 pm

Dear All, I would like to try a large Foil kite.

I already know for Sure my Bar ist too short.

I would like to put my lines to a longer " self Made Stick"

Nothing Special: Just to try the Kite with a longer Bar vor a few hours.
No jumping , only light Wind.
I do not even need a Center whole (I will Just use a Metall Ring, tied to the Bar.

Actually I would say, a normal broom Stick, would be ok
Or a piece of an old Windsurfing boom.

But Not sure.

Maybe you have some good ideas.

Again , Just to try a few hours.

Thanks

BR
Simon

How wide is your biggers bar now?

With your hands in the center, wider bars need more power to steer. given big foil kites already are hard to steer it doesn't need to be extremely wide. A shorter bar means less steering force, more feedback and more precise steering.

Racing big foil kites I max out at 55cm bars, bigger give a bad feedback and the kite won't steer any faster. if you really need a tight kiteloop, just grab a leader line!

Hi Evan, thanks for your Feedback.

My biggest Bar ist 50cm (Steering lines 50 cm appart).

It is a rather small 12m Pansh Kite.... (I once tried a 10m Soul, and that was slow, but pretty ok with my Bar) the Pansh was unrealistic slow Tuning.

I would like to try 60cm. (Or even 65 ... Just for trying)

(To give the Pansh a Chance and some Credit.... I think the Steering lines should have been shorter for the First Sessions.... )
-<< but please Not another Pansh discussion Here. 😀

From all the talk about modifying pansh bridles here to improve the bad steering I would blame it on the kite instead of the bar and doubt you would gain much with a wider bar unless you constantly need to fish pole the bar to get any response.

What is the Pansh kite that you have? if it's a Genesis do the Jakob Mixer mod it will make it turn much faster and it takes 5 minutes to do. If it's an Aurora or A15 then a bigger bar will absolutely help. 60 cm or 65cm should be good!

A wooden hockey stick would be much much better than a broomstick. Depends on what part of the world you are in whether you can find one.

Thanks a Lot for all the Ideas. Just as a Feedback:

After "calculating" all the little parts and the shipping costs for all the different little parts, I decided to just buy a Bar-stick.

Just putting the lines from my old Bar to the new Long Bar (including splicing new leaderlines, a new Depower Line, and changing the whole setup from high Y to Low V, and of course a new Saftey line) took me aprox 6. Hours.......

Oh Boy..... Building a bar really is hard Work..... 🤔

Don’t forget the need for throw as well as bar length for many large foils:

Just started flying an Aurora3 15m on a 60cm bar. First impression was that this bar is certainly long enough. What I have noted is that I do want a long bar throw. To early for me to say but I may use a race style 3or4 to 1 long tail trim system to supplement my desire for a long throw with this kite. As said above you can always pull a leader for steering but this does not help the need for throw/sheeting range.

Kite attitude seem to sell bars without lines.

Carbon MTB handlebars are easy to mod and relatively cheap on AliExpress. I run 4 of them for my foil kites and LEI’s, all are 60cm.

Nice, what do you do for the center hole?
