carbon wing leaking through screw hole

Postby neilhapgood » Fri Feb 18, 2022 12:22 pm

Hi all,

I have a carbon wing that is hollow and water has leaked in through one of the screw holes.

I can get the water out but its going to take a long time!

Any ideas how to seal the screw hole whilst leaving enough space for a screw to go through it?

And any tips for getting the water out?!

many thanks

Hi,

u will need to use a vaccum pump. I did fix similar issue.
Drill tiny hole on the wing. The is your exit for vaccum. Seal bottom of bolt hole.
Make a seal with vac line on tiny hole and pour epoxy on open bolt hole. Start a vaccum to suck in epoxy. Stop at some stage.

Redrill the bolt hole if needed. Tidy the vac exit one.

thats it.

Amazing, thanks loads for that, could you let me know what vacuum pump you use? First I have heard of such devices!

We mostly use a fridge compressor as vac pump. Its cheap or can be sourced for free.

A vaccum cleaner is a vac pump too :) But to big. A kite pump can be a vac pump, but u need more hands to help with pumping :)

I like downunder's solution but I'd try to wash the inside free of any salt crystals first if you live by the sea. I have a wing I didn't seal very well around the edges, I used a space invader foam but that's a messy process. And I'm sure now you've had the issue, if you are making the wings yourself, next time be sure to have a solid section around the bolt hole locations. I've 3D printed wing cores in the past, using cubic infil but it can be hit and miss if the cubes of the infil actually seal during the print. Most 3D printing slicers these days have options to intersect shape to control infil, i.e. you can intersect a cube around the bolt hole locations and make this volume 90% infill.

My current wings, I make moulds of from the models and then I load the shells with twill, uni, biax, uni and then pack from the middle out on each side to give extra strength progressively towards the centre. I pack some cell core into the bigger voids and epoxy glue mix just inside all the perimeter and along the bolt fixing screws line.
