I get that Nomex has some great properties, but isn't that overkill for a kiteboard? What is ideal for an aircraft structure isn't necessarily ideal for our application. Specially if it's significantly harder to work with than typical PVC foam cores.
...

With that being said, I'd love to see your results! Good luck!
Great post ; I Like being chalanged !! :thumb:

Did you know ; Nomex honneycomb can be Hot-Wired ?

Nomex is only a Bitch to work with , untill ya learn the rules
for how to use it ; it's kinda like learning how to treat a woman ,"Intimately"
(when ya screw it up , the result is problematic) For You ! ! LOL

BTW -- the Biggest reason I wanna use the Nomex Honneycomb , is
that I purchaces $9,000 worth of the stuff off a Aircraft forum I am on ; I
payed under a $1-k for it , and got 4' X 8' sheets of it to literrly Burn while
experimenting the best way to use it in this application !!!

Hey, Billie, how thick is it? What is going to be your method for bonding the initial layer(s)?

I have some ideas on how it can be done, but no actual experience.

Please keep us updated on your building process.

Unless you're absolutely rooting to have a Nomex Inside™ sticker on your board, the best material doesn't necessarily make the best kiteboard.

With that being said, I'd love to see your results! Good luck!
I have built boards using 9mm Corecell with a tinted epoxy resin, and they were still translucent if you held them up in front of the sun.

So, Bille, if you completely screw up the shape and build quality, it could still look pretty cool.

I have very little doubt that you have the smarts and perseverance to make this work, and I think I am not the only person interested in seeing how it works out.

My first few boards, at least... were not good.

But there is lots to learn about not just the shape, but also the processes involved, and I got better every time.

....And back in the old days, even the companies selling product, sometimes had some pretty nutty ideas about what really worked!

It is , .250" thick , 1/8' cell diameter , 3-Lb/^3 -ft density.
Also , .375" ; same as above ...

I will go with 1/4" thick board first because i have a bunch of it, and add
peelply to the top deck; see what the stiffness looks like ; if that doesn't
work out , then add some carbon 50-K uni to the top and cover it over with
some 1/2-oz glass to hold it there.
I can adjust the layUp and thickness , accordingly ; after I make the first one.

Trent --- I would really Like to hear your ideas !!! :thumb:

Hi Billie

Do you have a means to taper the core at the ends? I have never used honeycomb just corecell and divinycell and they areeasy to shape as required.

An idea would be to make a precured base on a sheet of aluminum or whatever you like. Use peel ply and make a nice light skin. Then adhesive the nomex to that. Then you could use either cnc or a router taper jig...I think it must be able to shape in this way.

Then the top just add anotherprecure after you have all your inserts and rail sorted.

My 2c.

YES . :thumb:

Nomex can be Hot wired , OR -- after it's glued to the bottom
lamination next to the call-plate, or mold ; you can use 50g
sand paper to taper it. You MUST sand "In" the direction that
the honeycomb cells are glued together ; if ya sand against
that grain, it will destroy the cells .
Ask me how i know . :( Yea it was an expensive part !

After i get a TT that I'm satisfied with ; I will make
a video and explane everything necessary for anyone
to build off your mold, or adjustable callplate . Nothing
magic about using Nomex honneycomb ; ya just got to
do it right or the part is Trash. In the end, the Nomex is
Much better in compression than any foam on the market
and much Much lighter than a comparable core supstitute
for it's compressive streingth .

Next up, will be a hollow mast, for a hydrofoil ; nobody
will be able to beat my streingth to weight , and I got
beer to back up my mouth !! LOL

Can you bend Nomex honeycomb so as to add rocker to the board? Pardon my ignorance but I've never worked with it before.

OH good heavens YES ; bend around a conner ,at a Much smaller
radious than Foam !!! The thicker the Nomex ; the less the radious.
