25.6.2008 Day 1: Trials

The fourth round of the PKRA 2008 World Tour happening at Bozo Beach,
Cabarete in the Dominican Republic kicked-off Tuesday with the mandatory
registration of competitors. The day was rainy and wet but there was an
average of 15-knots wind in the afternoon for a couple of hours. The
temperature peaked at 28o Celsius around 1:00 pm when most people were out
riding 12-meter kites, including a few local riders. Since outdoor
activities were limited by the weather, a table tennis tournament was
organized at Viva Tangerine later in the afternoon won by PKRA Judge Antoine
Jaubert.

The registration which started at 3:00 pm had a total of 57 competitors
representing 21 countries, with 45 male riders and 12 female riders making
the list. The Dominican Republic had a total of 16 registered male riders
competing in the event while the United Kingdom is represented by a total of
6 male and 2 female competitors – the two most represented countries in
this Tour stop.

Yesterday marked the start of a great week and the first day of the
competition which started out much better than yesterday with partial sunny
skies and high overcast clouds making the wind lighter than normal. The
light wind conditions made for a hot and humid day with the temperature
rising to 29o Celsius during the afternoon. Choppy water plus very large
shore breaks made for challenging conditions for the athletes.

All registered riders showed up for the 11:00 am mandatory skippers meeting
held at the beach, with race director Eric Troostheide briefing the
competitors before immediately postponing the start due to the light wind
conditions which were below PKRA standards.

Around 1:45 pm the wind gained enough speed for a starting sequence to take
place. Since there are more than 32 male riders, a qualification run was
held to tally the Freestyle competition ladder, with the top-ranked PKRA
athletes gaining automatic entry for the single elimination.

Most of the big names made it through without having to work too hard,
including Reno Romeu (North, Brazil) who qualified in heat #2. Local
Dominican riders Robinson Vasquez and Yan Carlos Paulino (Starkites) also
made it through the qualification round.

Two top Dominican riders, Alex Soto (Starkites) and Luis Alberto Peralta
(Best) faced off in heat #5 with Soto emerging as the better rider. Both
competitors had several handle pass moves. Peralta nonetheless came good
with a main event’s berth by winning a second round event in heat #13.
North Kiteboarding’s Marc Jacobs (New Zealand) took an easy win from team
mate Luke Whiteside (UK) in heat #6.

Madison Van Heurck (Naish, US Virgin Islands) also had an easy win in heat
#7, landing a 313, back to blind airpass and front mobe. Meanwhile,
Australian national champion Andy Yates (Slingshot) put on a good show for
his first ever PKRA competition with a unanimous win, landing a mobe, front
mobe, blind judge, KGB and a double s-bend to blind with air-pass.

Meanwhile, after suffering from a nightmare trip, Sweden’s Mikael Blomvall
(Nobile) made it to the event on time to qualify in heat #9 with a regular
and switch front mobe, s-bend to blind with air-pass and a mobe.

In the finals of the qualifiers, local rider Brahian De Leon-Paulino
defeated Whiteside in heat #21 with a 313, slim and mobe to face Yoel
Mendoza in the final berth in the competition ladder. In the dying winds,
Mendoza landed a slim, 313, back to blind air-pass to win over De
Leon-Paulino’s blind judge.

During the late final rounds of the day, the competition was actually
postponed due to little to no wind but the final heat eventually concluded
in time with the dying wind. The first day of the Cabarete World Cup 2008
finished around 5:00 pm with tomorrow’s skippers meeting scheduled at
11:00 am for the start of the Freestyle singles elimination.

The Cabarete PKRA Tour stop is being organized by Cabarete Events under the

Awesome action during the single elimination, whch could not be finished on the second day.
Lighter winds between 10-16 knots.

The final of the single elimination will be battle out on day 3:

The second day of the Cabarete World Cup 2008 – PKRA’s fourth Tour stop this year brought the best out of the competitors as there were no easy heats all day. The mandatory skippers meeting started as scheduled with the Cabarete weather getting back to standards even though the wind was still on the light side. The competition went into a wind delay about half way through but luckily strengthened shortly thereafter. The moderate breeze measured a maximum of only 13-15 knots around 2:00 pm – the best that the Cabarete weather could do all day.

The first heat of the men’s freestyle single elimination between US Virgin Island local Madison Van Heurck (Naish) and Michael Schitzhofer (JN Kites) was the first tough match to hit the water. The Austrian-born Schitzhofer landed some good moves but were overshadowed by too many crashes giving Van Heurck the chance to stomp some moves and win the heat. A regular and switch slim, regular and switch KGB plus a front mobe and kiteloop handle pass won the heat for the Naish rider.

First time PKRA competitor Andy Yates (Australia) out-nerved Tour pro Julian Hosp (Best, Austria) also in the first heat. Powered by a Slingshot, the 18 years old freestyle rider from Queensland put on a better show beating Hosp’s variety and power, stomping a blind judge 3, slim, 313 5, KGB and double s-bend to blind.

In the second heat, the “Dominican ripper” Manuel David Rondon powered by an EH kite clearly outclassed countryman Luciano Gonzales to advance in the second round while current PKRA #5 Alvaro Onieva (Best, Spain) defeated Reno Romeu (North, Brazil) with a nose grab slim, switch slim, grab hasselhoff, regular and switch KGB also in the same heat.

Heat #4 was a crowd pleaser as locals Alex Soto (Starkites) and Luis Alberto Peralta (Best) faced-off once again with Soto taking the win once more, proving to be the better athlete. The local crowd cheered wildly for both riders as they went head to head with Soto landing more technical and powered moves.

Managing a spot in yesterdays qualifying events, Mikael Blomvall (Nobile) of Sweden defeated PKRA #4 Cesar Portas (North, Spain) in an upset heat #6 with cleaner and more powered moves. North’s Marc Jacobs (New Zealand) also surrended from the race to the podium courtesy of a defeat from Las Terranas local Yan Carlos Paulino (Starkites). The young Starkite rider landed a greater variety of moves including a front mobe to blind, mobe, blind judge, 313 and hasselhoff while Jacobs struggled in the chop but still managed to land a blind judge with aerial handle pass, 313, front mobe and s-bend to blind.

Continuing with the day’s tough heats, Airush-powered Tom Hebert (New Caledonia) went down to last year’s Cabarete champion Ariel Corniel (EH Kiteboarding). Although Hebert landed several regular and switch moves, the overall power and variety of Corniel’s tricks gave him the edge he needed for a close 2-1 decision.

Starting off the second round was a close tussle between Van Heurck and Yates with the former putting his experience into action winning the heat through speed and power which are critical to a good run. Yates put up a good fight but the quality of Van Heurck’s moves won the heat.

Proving the toughness of the condition and the competitiveness of the Cabarete event, Rondon continued his charge with an upset win over Onieva in the same heat, landing all sorts of regular and switch moves with technical variations. Onieva tried to step it up with some grabs and style but did not have enough tricks up his sleeves to take the win.

Current PKRA #2 Kevin Langeree (Naish, Netherlands) dropped one local rider down the ladder by ending Soto’s run in heat #10 although it took a page-full of tricks to defeat the Dominican ace. Langeree managed to seal the win and advanced in the third round where he defeated United Kingdom’s Tom Court (North).

Going into the quarter finals, Van Heurck struggled in the condition and went down to Rondon who stomped all his moves while Blomvall continued his climb up the ladder with a win over Pastor in heat #14 as if gearing up the excitement for the next round. In what could have easily been the final, Corniel went up against world champion Aaron Hadlow (Flexifoil, UK) with both extreme athletes landing about 16 tricks each. Both had double passes with plenty of power and speed but the advantage went to Hadlow for his switch technical moves and variation, including a regular and switch mobe, regular and switch hasselhoff and regular and switch slim. Hadlow went on to defeat Blomvall in the semi-finals for a chance at the singles crown while Langeree defeated Rondon also in the semis for a berth in the single elimination finals tomorrow.

With the current single semi-final result, it looks like history will be repeating itself and the Cabarete record broken as Langeree and Hadlow will try to battle it out to be the first PKRA rider to win the men’s freestyle single two times in Cabarete.

In the women’s division, Poland’s Joanna Litwin (Nobile) ousted French kiteboarder Audrey Meyer (EH Kiteboarding) in heat #3 via a slim and a huge kite loop while Meyer landed a raley to surface pass and kiteloop to surface pass. Angela Peral (North) bowed down to fellow Spaniard and last year’s PKRA champion Gisela Pulido (Slingshot) in heat #5 with Pulido landing a blind judge, 313, slim and front mobe against Peral’s raley to blind and downloop to blind.

In heat #6 of the second round, Karolina Winkowska (Naish) defeated Litwin with a raley to blind, blind judge and slim while Bruna Kajiya (Best, Brazil) emerged victorious against Jo Wilson (Naish, UK) also in the same heat. Kajiya landed a blind judge, s-bend to blind with air pass and front side 360 off the waves rolling in. Wilson tried her best and went for a blind judge and back to blind air pass but only managed a raley to blind and a back to blind.

Pulido secured the first spot in the final by beating Susi Mai (Cabrinha, Germany) with a slim, 313, raley to blind and mobe. Mai landed a nice raley to blind and kiteloop but loosing to Pulido over technical difficulty. Kajiya grabbed the other spot in the final with a win over Winkowska, landing a blind judge, s-bend to blind, back to blind air pass and front side 360.

The wind began to drop at around 4:30 pm so the competition was called off for the day with the finals being postponed for tomorrow, much to the delight of the remaining competitors. The wind forecast for Friday is still questionable but Saturday and Sunday have a better forecasts.

27.6.2008 Day 3: Single Elimination Finals and first round Double Elimination

PKRA’s fourth tour stop this year - the Cabarete World Cup 2008 is on its third day of extreme kiteboarding competition as the Freestyle single elimination comes to a conclusion. In what ended as a successful day started out quite slowly with the weather uncooperative during much of the day. During the early morning hours there was sunshine but absolutely no wind. Around 10:45 am, the rain moved in and there were periods of heavy downpours. After the skippers meeting at 11:00 am, the competition went into a series of rain and wind delay until about 2:00 pm when the wind had enough speed to start a sequence but still there were threatening clouds close by. The race director decided to start the women’s heats with the battle for third place going up first. After about a minute before the green flag, the wind changed directions and came to a halt, causing the kites to drop in the water.

About an hour later, the wind came back and showed enough strength to start the competition. Under clear skies, the first heat of the day started with Germany’s Susi Mai (Cabrinha) going up against Poland’s Karolina Winkowska (Naish). The Cabrinha-sponsored rider won the heat, taking the 3rd podium position with a raley to blind, front to blind, raley to wrapped and a double back kiteloop against a lone but impressive blind judge for Winkowska.

In the women’s single final, Bruna Kajiya (Best, Brazil) had a really close battle against PKRA champion Gisela Pulido (Slingshot) of Spain. Kajiya’s moves were more powered but not as clean and with less variety with that of Pulido’s moves which caused her the win. Pulido landed a slim, blind judge, front mobe, 313 and raley to blind to win the championship title while Kajiya stomped a blind judge, s-bend to blind and back to blind air pass for the 2nd podium spot.

In the men’s final rounds, Manuel David Rondon (EH Kiteboarding), the pride of the Dominicans claimed 3rd spot overall, winning against Sweden’s Mikael Blomvall (Nobile) with slightly more technical difficulties, variation and cleaner moves. The local crowd favorite stomped a regular and switch slim, regular and switch front mobe, regular and switch KGB, 313 and mobe to blind over Blomvall’s regular and switch slim, regular and switch mobe, 313, KGB and blind judge.

The battle for first place was a close heat as is always between Kevin Langeree (Naish, Netherlands) and PKRA champion Aaron Hadlow (Flexifoil, UK). In a 3-2 decision in favor of Langeree, the Naish-sponsored rider landed a super powered regular and switch KGB, mobe 5, 313, non-inverted slim chance, late-pass mobe, double back mobe, kiteloop handle pass, blind judge 3, front mobe to blind, s-bend to blind with aerial handle pass and blind judge 5. Hadlow landed a regular and switch back to blind air pass, regular and switch hasselhoff and regular and switch slim but rode with less power than Langeree.

After the finals, the competition quickly moved into the start of the double elimination rounds before the day was over. Michael Schitzhofer (JN Kites) of Austria took out fellow Austrian Julian Hosp (Best) in the 18th heat of the competition with cleaner and more powered tricks and Sam Light (Naish, UK) in heat #22. Brazil’s Reno Romeu (North) ousted home town old schooler Luciano Gonzalez (Starkites) with solid new school riding also in the same heat plus another Dominican in the person of Robinson Vasquez in heat #22. North’s Cesar Portas of Spain resumed his bid for another top spot winning by taking out North team mate and New Zealand’s Marc Jacobs in heat #20 with powered and cleaner landings.

Heat #21 became a battle of two French buddies between Sebastien Garat (RRD) and Tom Hebert (Airush). Garat took the win with more technical difficulties, landing a regular and switch slim, regular and switch back to blind air pass, mobe, 313, front mobe, s-bend to blind and blind judge 3 against Hebert’s blind judge 3, regular and switch back to blind air pass and mobe. Garat ironically lost to Spain’s Alvaro Onieva (Best) in heat #25 with the Spanish champ riding with more speed and power plus with a few grabs thrown in.

After the completion of the first two rounds of the doubles for the men and the first round of the womens, the competition was called off for the day around 5:45 pm. Tomorrow’s skippers meeting is set for 11:00 am to conclude the doubles and see if Kevin Langeree will be the first repeat winner of the Cabarete World Cup. 28.6.2008 Day 4: Double Elimination Final Results Freestyle

PKRA, the world foremost authority on kiteboarding concludes the Freestyle competition in this beautiful beach in Cabarete, Dominican Republic. Under a perfect weather, another round of exciting kiteboarding action drew to a close as the Freestyle double finished off with intensity that only PKRA can deliver.

Providing the perfect finish to a perfect start, the weather cooperated all day with the wind and the sun providing the much needed fuel to finish the doubles event. Although there was a short 20-minute wind delay at 2:00 pm, the sky was clear in general with the wind all powered-up for a great final. The mandatory skippers meeting started on time at 11:00am and the competition finished at 4:15 pm with an awards ceremony on the beach.

History unfolded today as two world class PKRA athletes won back-to-back titles in the single and double events. Kevin Langeree became the first repeat winner of the Cabarete World Cup since the PKRA brought the tour here in 2001 while Gisela Pulido won her first-ever Cabarete title in the women’s division.

Freestyle Double Highlights

Reno Romeu (North, Brazil) continued his massive climb up the rankings in heat #26. After winning his two heats yesterday, Romeu went up against Austrian Michael Shitzhofer (JN Kites) in a very close heat but winning with a 4-1 decision. Romeu landed a 313, blind judge 3, mobe 5, a big kiteloop slim, front mobe and kiteloop 5. Shitzhofer landed his own 313, blind judge 3, kiteloop handle pass and a big front mobe but had less power than his North opponent. The Brazilian rider also won against UK’s Tom Court (North) in heat #30 after Court crashed hard on the water while Romeu kept plugging away and landed his staple tricks. It took an aggressive local rider Alex Soto (Starkites) to stop Romeu’s assault up the ladder in heat #31 going into the last four heats. The Dominican rider who was fresh from a win against countryman Ariel Corniel, ended Romeu’s magic with higher technical difficulty and switch variety.

Soto actually started his assault up the rankings in heat #27 taking out North rider Cesar Portas. Riding with more power and landing more technically difficult moves, Soto stomped a regular and switch mobe, regular and switch KGB, a front mobe to blind, double s-bend to blind and a nose grab slim against the regular and switch front mobe, slim, blind judge, front side 360 and mobe from Portas. The Dominican rider then faced off with another Spanish rider Alex Pastor (Naish) in the 29th heat, again out-powering and beating Pastor with regular and switch moves, powered slim, 313, backside 360 and a double s-bend to blind tail grab.
Andy Yates (Australia) powered by a Slingshot kite knocked down 3rd ranked Alvaro Onieva (Best, Spain) with some super clean riding skills in heat #27. Landing a regular and switch slim, s-bend to blind with aerial handle pass, KGB, blind judge with aerial handle pass, mobe 5 and front mobe, Yates overpowered the more experienced Alvaro who started the heat on an 11m kite but changed down to a 9m when the wind picked up while Yates was on a 13m the whole heat. After an initially abandoned heat due to a massive drop in the wind, Yates went up against the Dominican pocket-rocket Ariel Corniel (EH Kiteboarding). The young Australian rider put up a good fight with his regular and switch slim, front mobe, mobe to wrapped, front mobe to blind, a double s-bend to blind, blind judge and mobe 5 but ended up loosing the heat because Corniel unleashed a bag-full of tricks, nearly doubling the number of moves that Yates had. The former Cabarete champion won with greater variation, technical difficulty and power, landing a blind judge, KGB, front mobe, front mobe to blind, pete rose, 313, mobe, slim, mobe to wrapped, non-inverted slim, and a double s-bend to blind with air pass.

In the last four heats of the competition, Sweden’s Mikael Blomvall (Nobile) stopped Soto from aspiring for a podium position in heat #32 to the disappointment of the local crowd but Manuel David Rondon (EH Kiteboarding) came to the rescue in the following heat, lifting the crowd spirit when he defeated Blomvall. Rondon’s regular and switch moves along with a 313, front side 360 and raley to wrapped earned him the heat.

Despite snapping two lines in heat #34, world champion Aaron Hadlow (Flexifoil, UK) managed to land enough tricks to take the win against Rondon. The Dominican bet had a lot of crashes and failed to take advantage of Hadlow having to swim in and find another kite.

The final event heat of the day was between Hadlow and Kevin Langeree (Naish, Netherlands) who faced off once again. Langeree came out firing in the heat and did not give up even when he crashed his kite hard onto the beach. Completely unfazed Langeree went for 20 moves to Hadlow’s 15, who had fewer crashes but lacked in power, height and speed. Langeree seems to be more focused this year and has stepped up his riding, becoming the first ever repeat winner of the Cabarete World Cup since winning the title in 2006.

The women’s division showed equally exciting matches with Joanna Litwin (Nobile, Poland) opening up the women’s heat with a slim against seasoned rider Jo Wilson (Naish, UK) but Wilson stayed focused on her game plan and came away with a raley to blind, back to blind, a handle pass and double blind to win the heat.

In the second round of heat #14, Johara Sykes-Davis (Flexifoil, UK) and Angela Peral (North, Spain) started neck and neck with both landing raley to blind and downloop to blind but Peral got the edge with a back to blind, a back to toeside surface pass and a back to wrapped with an ole while Sykes-Davies continued on with a krypt to surface pass. Peral took the win with more technical difficulty and power. The North-sponsored Spanish rider went on to defeat Wilson in heat #15 with more powered landings but lost to Karolina Winkowska (Naish, Poland) in heat #16.

Winkowska then went onto win over Germany’s Susi Mai (Cabrinha), landing a slim, front side 360 and a blind judge against Mai’s raley to blind and raley to wrapped. The Poland’s pride then went on to defeat tour leader Bruna Kajiya (Best) outclassing the Brazilian athlete with a blind judge, slim, raley to blind and blind judge 3. Kajiya landed a front side 360, blind judge with aerial handle pass and s-bend to blind, Winkowska winning with more technical difficulty and cleaner landings.

In the final heat, Gisela Pulido went out fresh and ready, stomping a blind judge, front mobe, slim, 313, and mobe over Winkowska’s blind judge 3 and slim – eliminating the need for a second final as Pulido went with more technical difficulty and cleaner landings giving the young Spanish champion her first ever win in Cabarete.

The King of Board-Off will be held tomorrow with a skippers meeting at 11:00 am. Congratulations to all the winners!

he last day of the Cabarete World Cup 2008 – the fourth stop of the PKRA
2008 World Tour was a complete wash out. Heavy rain started to pour down
around 9:00 am and continued on until the afternoon which prompted the race
director and the event organizers to call off the competition for the King
of Board-Off around 3:00 pm.

Nothing happened today except all the competitors were getting ready to pack
up and get themselves and their equipment back to Tarifa, Spain for the next
round of the PKRA World Tour on July 2 to 6.

The Rookie of the Event award sponsored by USA Vision Eyewear went to Andy
Yates (Australia, Slingshot) for his exemplary performance in Cabarete,
displaying extreme kiteboarding athleticism and sportsmanship worthy of a
PKRA.

The Professional Kiteboard Riders Association also would like to thank the
following major sponsors for making the Cabarete event possible - Millennium
Resort & Spa and the Secretaria de Estato de Turismo. Gold sponsors include
