Looks really good. I dare say you might be able to sell the mount to non kitesports if you designed it well. E.g. I bet motorcyclists might like a really good waterproof casing if it worked with a handlebar mount.
Might help to keep the price steady (and give you guys a steady income?) if you are able to keep selling them to non-kitesurfers?

I might have missed this earlier on but, are you able to determine the specs that are needed for the phone? E.g. will my 4 year old phone have the necessary sensors needed?

Love everything about it except the spelling of "lose" ("loose") under the FAQ section :D

Does the mount need to be placed on a specific place? and specific orientation? for TT and for foilboards? possible in front of the board?

Just got a mail where they said they ditched the original mount due to leakage and designed their own case fully waterproof and the 4 clips (as shown in previous post). These guys really go the extra mile...and all of this without any profits in mind! Amazing...you know what they say, if it ain't Dutch it ain't much :thumb: 8)
Next to that they did some further testing with a pole...looking forward to see those results. Also there willl be a section in the app where you can vote for new functionality, sound pretty good to me! Think we got a WOO killer here.

Yes, the content of the mail;

---------------------------------------------
Hi fellow Surfr.!

First of all, thank you for pre-ordering the mount and/or subscribing to the mailing list. The (positive) responses have been overwhelming and much appreciated. With this e-mail we would like to update you about the progress we’re making with the app, and also important news about the mount, if you want to skip to that part please scroll down.

In the meanwhile, we are fully online on the social channels, please follow and subscribe to get the quickest updates!

The app

In terms of functionalities the app is almost finished and ready to go. So, we’re still very much on track for the Android release to the Google Play Store before 15 June.

A lot of nice ideas have come from you, thank you for that. All the ideas are being put on an Idea board. This idea board will be open to every Surfr. and you will be able to add idea’s and vote on existing ideas. A sneak preview of the Idea Board, which will be fully integrated in the mobile app:

Testing.

We had some good wind days in the Netherlands and together with a group of about 15 other kiters the app has been pushed and tested. Kiteloops, sending the kite, board offs, using waves as ramps and more. This was a very important step and just in the one weekend we gathered lots of data to fine-tune the calculation algorithm of the app. Some of the bigger boosters of the Netherlands have joined the test force and I was happy to see 15M+ jumps rolling in on Surfr. 20M still has to be crushed!

‘Pole dancing’ – testing the accuracy

Our previous tests had mainly focused on testing versus WOO and versus PIQ. A few days ago, we started testing against a telescopic pole we brought to the beach. It’s a 11 meters long pole, in this case used as a 7 meters pole. You can clearly see that my mate Floris is going just a bit higher than the pole here. He managed to actually touch the pole with his board right on the top a few times as well.

We’re still figuring out how to test in stronger conditions with high wind, going 15M+. But this definitely will be continued on our Youtube channel!

The mount 1.0.

And now for the bad news.. Which is actually good news for the long term.

The mount which was available on the website till a week ago was a combination of existing market products. Since we’re just starting up the Surfr. business this was a choice we had to make. Our initial idea was to use and combine existing market products for the mount and start working on a perfectly designed Surfr. mount later this year, when we see enough demand for the app and mount.

During the testing we unfortunately found out that the some of the mounts got water inside. Even when it is just a few drips the mount then starts to fog up which makes it hard to read the screen. Although we have lots of mounts available & ready to ship, based on these test-results and feedback of the testers I decided to not ship this mount*.

Our current stock of these mounts will still be used for testing, but not for distribution to you.*

The new Surfr. mount!

The good news though is that based on the amount of pre-orders and responses so far, we decided to directly produce a specific Surfr. mount instead, fixing all the weaknesses of the first mount. The main improvement lies in the 4 clips used to completely seal and tighten the mount. This is a huge improvement over the current mount. Furthermore, the fixation of the phone within the mount has improved substantially. Also, this mount does not need an extra waterproof bag anymore.

Pricing and availability of the Surfr. mount!

The downside is that we’re currently looking at approximately 8-9 more weeks more of production and shipping process for the new mount. This could be a few weeks earlier or later, depending unfortunately depending on a lot of stuff that is out of our direct control, especially these days. Together with some help I’m working fulltime on getting the mounts ready as quickly as possible, we’ll keep you posted about the progress!

We understand this is kind of a bummer, but we ‘prefer’ to keep you waiting and then ship you the perfect mount instead of shipping you one we don’t fully believe in anymore based on our testing*.

Producing our own Surfr. mount in relative limited volumes (at the moment) is an expensive process. Therefore, we have increased the price to 35 euro on the website, excluding shipping. For you the price will be 19 euro (excluding shipping) as a small compensation for the delay and because we highly appreciate your pre-order in these early days of The Surfr. App.

We will send you an invite to the webshop including payment options within a few weeks.

Note that the Android app will still be available earlier, at latest 15 june. The app can then already be used for GPS tracking, speed, when you take it with you in a waterproof bag around your neck. For jumps you have to wait for the mount though.

Finally

Thank you for putting trust in Surfr. already. We’re still in the early days, having big plans to change the kiteboarding game & kiteboarding safety. We just need a little bit of patience from you right now and we will make sure it’s gonna be awesome!

Kind regards,

Herbert

*If you really can’t wait we still provide the option to buy the existing mount (+ plastic water proof bag that goes inside the mount) at your own risk and without warranty as long as we have stock of them. If instructions are accurately followed the phone will stay dry for most of the time or at least won’t get wet because of the waterproof back. If you want to make use of this option please send a reply back and we’ll ship you a mount right away for 10 euro, excluding shipping. Once the new mount is available we highly recommend that you upgrade by then.

Good stuff, I’d definitely rather pay a bit more for something that doesn’t leak!

What's the concern? Makes perfect sense they started off with existing hardware...however they took their responsibility and didn't sell their initial product and took the extra effort in designing their own case which is a big step up which was planned later and pre-poned this! So instead of having to upgrade later they saved some frustration with early adopters

Does the phone require to have a cell connection to measure height, or can it be used without?

'' Offline/Online: the app can operate offline and record everything offline. All calculations happens offline on the device. Live will only work with internet connection (obviously). Reception on the water so far has been pretty good. ''
