Painting foils

Postby davesails7 » Sat Jan 10, 2015 8:28 pm

Why are most foils not painted? The only major manufacturer that paints the foil that I know of is Aguera.

I think painting a bright color has two advantages:
1. You can see the foil in the water, to help avoid hitting into it.
2. Bright colors don't heat up as much in the sun. Even the best epoxies lose strength when exposed to high heat. black surfaces can easily get into the 180 degree F range when left in the sun, which is a danger zone for most epoxies. Also, UV will likely degrade the laminate over time.

I don't know if it is about cosmetics because some really beautiful painting can be done on those extra surfaces. In the bicycle industry a few companies do this, I don't know what you call it, "half tones" maybe? I could see all sorts of beautiful stuff on carbon boards, masts, foils, etc. These are just a couple of examples of what red can look like in the (mostly) cosmetic weave layer.

it is called Kandy paint... you can either do it as a base or in the clear coat.. I am doing my carbon foil board this way with a twist.

only down fall is that it cost a shit ton for kandy paints... 1 pint is like 70 bucks ready to spray from my local shop.. might order some from house of kolors or check out TCP and see what they have. You better have some spraying under your belt to tackle Kandy though. Just my 3 cents

just looked into it you can kandy gelcoat also.. that is the way to do it in a mold...

It hurt my feelings to paint over the carbon, especially after it turned out so nice but for practicality its pretty much a no brainer, the benefits, protection from the sun's heat and UV is the #1 concern , its easier to see and find damage or structural stress cracks with paint before they become catastrophic failures, I've used cosmetic layers of red, blue and silver " Texalium" ( Fake carbon) and found it too gets extremely hot in the sun so I'm not sure candy colors would relieve the problem.
So even though my fat head would like to display my craftsmanship with carbon common sense says paint it. ( and I suck at painting )

I have 2 set of mast moulds cut. one for plate mount and one for custom tuttle mount..

Plus I wouldn't of painted yours just for the fact you can always make another one. Like the work of art of yours the first time... carbon does look sexy for sure

will keep you up dated

thanks

Is there any good off the shelf paint you would use for the clear gloss coat on a foil? I put a wet sand finish on a foil and I am going to sell it and buyers are weary of it not being shiny. I don't think I have a thick enough clear coat left to re-gloss it through sanding and buffing. I know I can use polyester resin but I was hoping to use something I can spray that also gets nice and hard but may not require as much sanding and buffing.

anything you get in a spray can will be soft. but if it is just to make it shinny for the new customer go to the hardware and get a can a clear lacquered home hardware sells it. Or you can go to car quest and pick up a can of clear coat for cars , but will will be soft... will feel hard but finger nails will leave marks...

Read on the french KBHF forum: seems the one best price / quality compromise is using spray can of Graffiti paint.
Montana is one of the popular brand http://www.montanacolors.com/

This is probably what I'll be using to repaint my foil before the spring.
