I have seen the F-one foil here in Cape Verde, and it has a similar system but the screw-rod goes from front piece to back piece, and is screwed in from the front. Very clever, very clean, definitely the way to go for simplicity i believe.

I just wonder how the mast does not open in two at the joint with this element inside that would tend to force the two halves to separate.

It just needs to have enough flat face-to-face surface around the outside of the joint face. It means it isn't a jam tight taper contact on the tapered, or plug and socket surfaces - just a good enough fit to be snug and prevent twisting.
