Crazy idea or possible future hydrofoil hover board design?

Postby fun2kite » Tue Dec 15, 2015 4:15 pm

Hi All,

I had this crazy idea, which is most likely not implementable today yet, but.. I wanted to pick your brains on theoretical feasibility of this idea. And maybe, inspire some DIY inventor to actually implement it.

So here it is: We all heard of magnetic levitation right?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4lW7xydnH8

So now imagine a board that has strong electrical magnets inside and can magnetically levitate a hydrofoil wing at a distance the mast normally holds the foil.

now we have a board and a wing that can go under water. But NO mast.
And that is the idea of the magnetic levitating hydrofoil. (MLH)

Now just take a kite and go ridding ! Cool?

The question is: what would it take to build one? If anybody can do it, imagine how awesome that would be. Almost NO drag.

I am sure, the physicists and mathematics on this thread will find flaws in my design, but maybe, just maybe this is not a crazy idea?

Looking forward to your comments.

Fine if you want to only have a few cm of height between board and foil I guess.
Could probably be powered by a nuclear backpack.
A few software tweaks and no doubt you could offer beachside mri to offset costs.
Brilliant! :crazy2:

you normally want the foil about 2 or 3 feet below the board let's call it 1 meter below the board. f=mu qm1 qm2 / 4pi r^2, r=1m, mu=µ0 = 4π×10−7 N / A2, let qm1=qm2, let's say you weigh 175kg. 175 = 10e-7 (2q)), q=8.75*10e7 tesla, an MRI will run about 1 tesla, so you would need a magnet about a million times stronger than the strongest magnet on earth. Not gonna happen. that r^2 factor is a bitch can't really do anything about it. maglev trains would have the same problem if they rode a meter above the rails but they ride a few centimeters above it. physics says nope

As edt said, it's not going to be practical.

Instead of trying to do what we currently do, we could do away with not just the mast, but the board too.

The kite pulls a string, so all you have to do is connect that string to a foil. The rider can then be somewhere along the line.
Lots of development needed, but it's even simpler than what we have now.

It is possible to have a wing in ground effect board, that would tend to maintain an air gap to the water surface, but it would depend on how smooth the water was.

That would be more like parasailing. Don't know about you, but my favourite part is riding the board.

To the OP. I hope you don't wait for the gazillion dollar magnet w/ computerized control when a piece of aluminum works really well.

The super conducting gazzilion dollar magnet usually needs cryogentic temps to work.... So yourl need to cool it with liquid nitrogen.... That will be amusing in the water.

What if we fill the kite bladder with helium to help take some of the kiters weight off the board? Then the magnets would not need to be so strong!

I think the fact that you need a rigid mast kinda screws the whole idea.

I can think of a lot of other reasons why it wouldn't work but I think that is probably the single biggest reason.

Plus your mast actually functions as one of your control surfaces so eliminating it may not be a good thing.

having an equal and opposite force to the magnet is more challenging in water than it is on land as well.

Haha. Thank you all for the math and physics of it. I knew you would find a technical hole in this. Will stick with a setup I have now that does not require a nuclear backpack :-)

But apart from not being practical possible - I like your idea/thought :thumb:
