Any of you hydrofoil freaks doing distance runs?

Postby plummet » Sat Apr 23, 2016 3:38 am

A to b stuff?

Maybe 80-100km?

It strikes me as the ideal too to do a long distance coastal adventure run! :remybussi:

On my foil without switching toe/heel side that would be impossible due to the high back leg pressure.

But my foil is from 2014, I have heard later models require less back leg pressure.

Nevertheless the problem would be general safety, in case the weather changes or gear failure. Basically the same as with long distance downwinders.

And with a foil going upwind over vast distances is not really an issue, as it has been for two decades with al the other kiteboard types available!

Yes. Fun for sure. In light winds that can shut down you can find yourself pretty far from your launch. I had to stash my gear and borrow a bike one time to get back to my launch and car very far away.

If you get tired you can ride on the board, not the foil, no? That should be fine to relax the legs.

All I know is that I go 5 min in one direction my leg is soar. ;-)

It depends on how much wind there is. in low-wind it is not efficient (compared to the foil)
Plus you have a huge fin underneath your board, which momentum makes it hard to stabilize the board through waves and chop.

So basically this is not an option.
Moving to toe/heel side is, but especially toe-side riding is quite difficult compared to a TT or even wave-board.

Did you try a hydrofoil already?
Because that is indeed what I have too, including my foil buddies.

On my wave-board I could go on for maybe an hour in one direction, no issue there at all.

you need to adjust your back stab so that you have more downforce if your leg is getting sore , which foil you got ?

Zeeko Makaira freeride carbon 2014.
But I hear it from everybody around me.

Can you be more specific about this technique?
Once I managed to place my feet further away, which did help.

But once you are gaining speed the pressure is increasing.
I ride strapless by the way.

Hi,
I have the 2014 Makaira also and can go forever in one direction (or the other) whithout any pain. I am riding it strapless though. So i am sure there must be something wrong with your strap position.
Greeting,
Jaros

I never added any strap to my board
I can ride it without pain in any direction when I go with not much kite-power.
But when powered up (and go faster) it starts to be a pain sometimes.

I also hear that from other people on foils like the Mozes and other brands.

I would like to know what I am doing wrong.

I dont do it myself, only short runs like 10km to say hi to other riders at other spots along the coast, and 10km upwind only takes maybe 45 minutes, and less when downwind, depending on gear and wind of course...

I think "distance runs" but in small circles like 3-5km is somewhat the thing all racers do "daily", or at least the days when out.

Yesterday when we had a good session, one of my mates saw on his GPS he had ridden over 100km.
Of course not from a to b, but 100km riding corresponds to about 65km if you went upwind and maybe 75 if downwind, so would be easy to do from a to b if you wanted.

The thing is it is really really easy and relaxing on a hydrofoil, so the almost perfect tool for this because you dont get tired but can stand relaxed on both feet on any course, apart from having a much wider windrange than other boards :thumb:
You can also choose to make it a good workout instead, pushing to the max with a big racekite, so your legs will get an awesome workout and "burn" - or you can ride totally relaxed with the same kite upwind too, if not pushing it - amazing you can choose and find the level you like.

Riding the board down on the water would be totally stupid, as way too hard physically, and difficult, so never an option.

The only downside is if the wind drops totally - here a windfoil is way way better and would be my choice if I went quite far on open water distance runs particularly, thus the kitefoil is only the secondbest regarding safety/dropping wind, but not as good in low wind

For long distance runs along the coast the kite hydrofoil is maybe the best tool though, and you can ride "forever" when out there, you get so much ground covered under your feet in a jiffy :thumb:
