Interesting variance in power holding from various riders.

Sweetspots for my quiver @77kg using smaller and smaller wings in wind above 10 knots:

11m2 racefoil ELF Joker5 ... 6-7 knots
12m2 Zeeko Notus Air ........ 8 knots
9m2 Takoon Furia ........... 10 knots
8m2 Takoon Furia ........... 12 knots
7m2 Takoon Furia ........... 14 knots
6m2 Takoon Furia ......... 16-17 knots
5m2 Takoon Log ............. 19 knots
3.5m2 Takoon Log ........... 25 knots

Maybe a tad bigger in really warm summerwind :D

155 lbs with spotz 2

Sonic2 15m: lowest - 14 kts
Sonic2 11m: 13-20 kts
Sonic 9m: 18-25 kts

Picking up sonic 2 9m and 18m soon

I also have an 8m edge that I've ridden over 30 knots, but was overpowered.

My 6m dice I've ridden over 30 kts and was never overpowered.

I have an old 7m Crossbow which is my "go to" kite. It seems that if there is any obviously perceptible wind then I can ride, say 13n knots and up. The only limiting factor is whether I can water start. Sometimes it takes a bit of whipping around to get up. Once I'm moving I'm off (but you all knew that).

I can be on the same kite up to 30 knots.

The perception of wind depends on the direction and location. Northerlies are cross-offshore(ish) so the water is smooth and there are no whitecaps. It often looks like there is no wind at all. Southerlies are cross-on and we get a fair amount of whitecaps with not too much wind.

I have a 10m Crossbow that I use when there is the faintest sign of whitecaps, about 10 knots. I have done my fastest speed runs in relatively smooth water with this kite.

My 13m Crossbow hardly gets used at all. If it's too light for the 10m then it tends to be too light for the 13m. I have not developed my light wind foiling skills and instincts to a point where I can keep a big heavy kite in the air during a lull. That was never a problem on TT or race board so I am thinking of putting in a bit more effort with learning to use the big kite.

I have been experimenting with different bar types and I will try line extensions to see what else I can do to get more range and efficiency out of the old kites.

I am keenly looking for new kites to support the foiling addiction but I am very happy that the old kites are still working so well. Something like the Ozone Edge or Ocean Rodeo Flite are options.

I am thinking I don't want foil kites, especially for light wind. This is not "foil phobia". I used foil kites for the first 5 years of my kiteboarding life. For a start, modern foil kites are far too expensive. Close to double the cost of LEI. The other is the ability to self rescue. I dropped my 13m in too light winds and had a quite pleasant "sail" back to the beach sitting in the upturned kite. It would have been a nightmare to have to paddle in with a downed foil. I know how to self rescue with a foil. I also know how unpleasant they can be when full of water and sand.

The other side to foil kites is that they stay in the air in light wind a lot easier than an lei. For sub 10 knot I recon you are 4 times more likely to drop a lei than a foil. It takes some learning. But when you have the skill foil kite for sub 10 = less swimming. ps sub 10 knots you may be able to relaunch a foil. But generally have zero hope of relaunching a lei.

So true Plummet, so Oz, I understand you dont really use your 13m2 Crossbow much - as your 10 is so much easier to handle and keep flying (especially if you get the tad longer lines you dont use yet).

But a light LEI kite is just as easy, some definitely even easier to keep in the air, than a foil kite - so a win win with these.

Could be a really light normal strutted kite, but more likely a one or no strut kite - they are amazing and handles marginal wind even better than foil kites :thumb:

Only downside is they dont have the same peak power when accelerated, so you can not go as low, but the differenece is small and the benefits of a "floating" kite when the wind drops totally on you, is huge :naughty:

No comparison whatsoever to normal LEI kites, and around here noone really uses normal LEI kites at the size 12m2 and up, as too heavy - unless those over average weight of course
Light LEI kites and foilkites is the key when over 10m2.

I am also able to ride in 12-13 knots like you Oz, with a 7m2, but I am on the verge to being extremely underpowered and not in the sweet spot nomore (when using a small wing that is), so would not choose such a small kite when going out, but an 8m2 instead.

The newer light LEI kites are amazing, although also very different each of them - can only recommend these Oz :thumb:
