Just say No to the nose

Postby cglazier » Sun Jun 04, 2017 6:07 am

The newest and fastest hydrofoils seem to be eliminating the pointy nose sticking out in front ..thankfully.

I always worried that sharp noses on foils looked dangerous. I have only once seen anyone skewered by one (and that was a nasty leg wound that undoubtedly required a few stitches).

I remember asking a well known foil designer why he had a nose sticking out of the front wing on his hydrofoil and he said that one of his riders thought it would be a good idea.. hardly a convincing argument. I believe that pointy noses look fast on the showroom floor but they are simply not needed. I predict they will disappear as new designs come out.

Here are the newest fastest hydrofoils. I cannot think of any competitive race foil that has a nose now.

:thumb: Thanks, my words from the beginning. Sure the other manufacturers will also lose there noses with time.

I also think not all HF designers have too much idea of hydrodynamics and maybe one of them too much, has started with these stupid noses and many others have run behind  , that's how it maybe started.

Just my first foil had this stupid thing and I just cut it off. :D

How many got a nose ?

Apart from my very first Zeeko, the current ones are without.

And Ketos has been without since the start in 2012-2013.

Btw, the same goes for foil boards, get rid of the pointy nose, but I think it is only waveboards adapted to foils with noses

Moses has a nose. I've been considering cutting it off.

But where will the little pilot sit? It's about time! These noses have always made me question the credentials of their designers.

I would resist cutting the nose off a carbon fuselage. It could be there to help resist splitting forces from the front main wing bolt.

It's easier to visually estimate stresses in an aluminum (isotopic material) fuselage.

Don't "cut off your nose to spite your face". If it really bothers you then sell your foil and spend big money for a new racing foil. The used market buyers will thank you.
