What is jack-knife fall ? Never heard that
It is when your body falls over the down-wind rail of the board, like a hinged knife folding closed, caused by losing your balance in the side direction. Feet stay with the board, upper body falls towards the water, and the foil wings rise up towards the surface as the board becomes on its side. This leads to falling off the side of your board, downwind, making contact with the wings that are rising up.

(Recognizing this loss of balance early, and 'jumping off' is usually effective at preventing this sort of contact. Attempting to recover balance is the problem- so just give up and accept a safe fall.)

But I'm not a believer that 'good technique' is a reliable countermeasure for injury. It should reduce frequency of injury, but uncontrollable falls are still a reality for experienced foilers.

I have fallen in LOTS of (stupid) ways, but never like that.

Do anyone have a video of that???

The foil(mast) stays extremely "stiff" so it does not fold really, I would say, but your body could fold yes.

Of course you can fall to leeward, but then the kite will pull you away from the board, and/or your feet will be swept leewards instead of "hanging" onto the board, right?

Or is it only when your foil ventilates so just free of the water, as then the board could tilt to windward, and the jack-knife might occur I assume

Sounds really ugly if this can happen, as the wing will face just up on your head/throat/chest - so curious as to how it is possible

The more the stuff you have around your head the more chances to get the line caught on something you cant see...
Much rather have a line issue than open wound, concussion, not to mention ear protection! :o
Other factor is what others may do as in released kite looping and bar striking your head, seen this happen!
I remember well when even motorcycle helmets were not needed by the law, and NO one on a bike, skiing, snow boarding would consider wearing a helmet....
BUT now.....
Brain buckets just work!!
Your choice to protect your computer or not? :?:

Peter, yes it's body folding over.

I've done it a few times. kite is low and powered, usually cranking up wind. Foil is tilted to windward. I get a wave or chop or hit some seaweed, board tilts more to windward, body to Lee. Try to power out of it, board falls to windward and body get pulled off to Lee.
Problem is if you don't bail off and try to save it. Get dragged over wings.
Ive always managed to bail and get pulled away.
I think it's easier to get in this situation strapless.

Also can happen in slower more upright stance but is more of a roll-over.

I think solution is more like that ski-goggle face mask thing. Close to face.
I've totally given up on any for of eye cover due to fog, water on lenses. ( please don't give me recommendation on " non fogging " eye protection, I don't believe it anymore.)

Perhaps I could make custom molded kevlar face mask....

Started kiting in 1999-2000 and have had a LOT of contact with boards. Head to board. Ribs to board. And ankle to board.
This is the reason we started the long journey of creating a glassing method which is used to make hard boards with a soft shell.

Also a thin slim line head cap for under your hood or baseball cap. Not as effective as a helmet but certainly helps avoiding the initial slam of any impact.

Hej Scott,

I think a 120cm pocket board in that construction might interest a lot of foilers.
The cap insert is creative.

Thanks Tom.
Yeah —going to be a spacestick “pocket pod” that is under 120 - foil specific. Great for travel. Should have demos by April.
