I like a dual purpose board as it opens some more options when traveling (shallow spots, riding over the upper foiling windrange of your one kite quiver,...).
How adequate would that be with a foil bolted through? (I guess with a plate and shims wherever required)

Pros: Cost, deck pad, strong, multi usage...
Cons:?
Lack of stiffness for foiling?
Buoyancy/alloy foil?
Size? I've foiled on smaller boards than that... Looks like there's room to move the feet on that one!

I just made one with a Liquid Force Obscura wakeskate and Zeeko foil. I'm really happy how it turned out. I did it exactly like this video and it's even the same board. One thing I did was after drilling the holes, I cut small quarter size holes out of the decking by twisting a pipe on the deck to cut the foam. Then pounded in the T-nuts and covered them with deck pads that I cut using the same pipe. You can barely see the nuts now and wont feel them on your feet. Take your time measuring for the holes. Draw a line down the center on bottom of board using the fin holes as guide for center then put foil plate about 7 inches from tail where board is relatively flat.

The decking on this board is super think so it should provide enough float for the foil not to sink. I haven't tested it yet since it's still winter here but will soon.

It's just 9 ply maple very stiff. You can brush some poly into the holes before inserting the nuts. Cheap pocket board for sure. There's another guy in my are athats all he rides with a foil. Might be a few weeks until I can try it.

Looks like fun. May have to give this a shot!

I love how a skate looks with a foil but in the end have found the right skim is way more forgiving.

These guys make skims that can be ordered in rigid construction for an additional 10 bucks.

9 ply plasticized maple hard wood with super tough thermoplastic top and bottom sheet. Bowl shaped rocker reduces flex and helps it ride on the surface. Full deck pad can be ordered double thick for a bit more float.

Tough as nails, easy to mount, priced right dual purpose board.

19.7" at the wide point gets up on foil at 10 knots. Most people foiling a skate will tell you its better to wait for at least 12. Of course this is kite and wing specific but there is easy a two knot difference between a skim and a skate when it comes to get up and go.

A little more width and a little less rocker go a long way on the low end, both with or without the foil.

Its not just about min power needed to foil. Biggest difference is how they handle riding on the surface. A skim will surface ride and transition nicely where your not getting that from a skate. You really need to do it all flying on the skate. They have loads of staged rocker, which you might think a plus, but combined with less width, they bog down pretty quick after touching down. A skim can keep you up and riding on the surface as long as you need. Even experienced foilers can appreciate that kind of forgiveness in a board. I always know I can carve a quick turn, touch down to swap feet and get the hell out of there when things get sketchy, where a skate is far more likely to leave me in the drink and struggling to start back up in a bad spot.

Skates are still dope, that's just my 2 cents.
