Who rides the tallest mast?

Postby SaulOhio » Tue Mar 27, 2018 8:43 pm

I am not talking about somebody trying something insanely huge just to see if it will work. There is a video of a guy riding a 10 foot mast. What I am talking about is who regularly rides the tallest masts. How big of a mast do you enjoy riding?

I ride 110cm and I would not go back to 100cm.

What kind of riding do you do? Racing? Waves? Heavy chop? I presume not flat water.

I am asking because I am still working on my home made foils. I have a working version I was out on last weekend, but I still haven't built a full length mast. Trying to decide how long to make it.

It's amazing how much difference 10cm makes, I recently changed from 91cm to 101cm, and wish I changed earlier.
The benefits are obvious but the downsides are there, at first the extra hight is quite scary due to the fact your brain says to you that your about to crash as your too high, your up at ventilation height, and in the past it always ends badly.
Crashing can really hurt, I have had to develop a new crash teqnique as my shoulder was really becoming sore and possibly damaged from always putting my arm out to somehow lessen the impact, at first I kept my arm in tight to my side and this was a mistake, the full impact on my chest area made me go dizzy, so now I roll through the air to land on my back, and this works a lot better, getting away from the shore in dead onshore winds and waves is harder, and I now would not use it in the lagoon at low tide, I now have a 61cm mast for that.
Would I go back to the 91 as a regular size?
Not a chance!

Me too, at first. My technique is to keep both hands on the bar if possible to try to prevent flailing injuries or FOOSH (fall on out stretched hands).

I agree! Went from 95 cm to 105 cm (I think) and often where I would have over-foiled in a gust or wave, everything is fine and I keep going no problem.

How do you measure? Bottom of Tuttle box to top of fuselage?

Good point, I just look at the mast, it's marked as 101, I will take a tape measure to it, mine is a Moses plate mount.
Don't think I would change to the 110cm, getting off the beach through the waves is hard enough, the 101 is spot on for me, when all factors are taken into consideration.
Does anyone know if the 2018 mast is stiffer than the 2017, I have both, and the 2018 one is 250g heavier than the 2017 101 mast,
I have not used the 2017 mast yet, just bought it as a special end of year deal complete with all the other bits, can't resist a sale!

All of them. If you’re confident foiling 110 is better. But for learning shorter masts are better because the falls hurt less.

I've already learned on short masts. Time to build a longer one. I still overfoil or hit the tops of waves a lot. A longer foil would give me a larger error margin.
