Had a 1km swim yesterday with 15m Sonic2. No problem...got it rolled up in a tight sausage and on top of the board. Hand on back strap to keep board level and flutter kick and one arm paddle. A board with some volume is so key if you push the limits.

that old discussion was talking about https://shinfin.com/
I looked at the produt many times and decided not to buy at the end.
the idea of wearing those at all times, is a bit weird and I think they are a bit too long to ride on the board with them.

However, they could serve as extra protection of your "shin" against hitting thte foil :-)

I am actually quite keen on the idea of a backpack and flippers. Did anybody find a good "mesh" backpack to carry? I could not find anything "mesh" and light.
Also I looked at many flippers and could not find a model that is both small and light and yet easy to put-on at the moment you really need them.
If sombody found a right combo, I am interested.

Glad to hear you are okay. I good knife is a must, having two, even better...EEZYCUTS are a great choice.

Talking to a friend who recently had a long swim in side off conditions I had a crazy idea. I said in offshore winds why not wear a backpack with some flippers you could use to get back much faster and with less effort?

There was a thread where this was discussed long ago. Someone here has experience with it and had recommendations on which fins to use as they were small and light weight.

I had the similar situation but I was in LaVentana so water was not so cold and I wrapped my lines so well that if the wind was to pick up I could easily have drift launched. Its important to make the call to self rescue when you have the energy to take the time to wrap the lines carefully. I typically just swim up a center line taking care to move around the to the outside of the lines and then wrap them once I have put my leash on the kite. If you haven't deep water self rescued lately... maybe practice on a no wind day just to remind yourself how hard it can be...
I also pulled my board over my leading edge of the kite with the mast vertical in the water. This seemed like the best way to keep it with me without having to always hang onto it... no matter what its not gonna be fun. glad you made it in.

Just an idea. Instead of swimming and kicking with feet could you pump the foil by sitting on board and pushing with hands/weight transfer, foilboard CPR :). Similar how hf-wave surfers pump between waves. But this with submerged board and no fly on foil. Using the same idealogy how waves pump foilboard fast downwind.

I'm going to comment on that video. I feel it's unrealistic due to the calm water and absolutely no wind.

If I let my board go like that guy in the video, for so long. It's gone. It's pumping in the chop and too far away. 2 -3 seconds and it's gone. not only that, the board is probably now tangled in the lines.

When releases board at 4:50. Gone again. this is what happened to me. It drifted off so fast. Now you have the kite to contend with, so as soon as the board is out of arms reach, it's gone.

Try paddling in one foot of chop too. I couldn't do it...

Hasn’t been a problem for me. I’ve only done this when the wind was so light there was no hope of relaunch so there was no worry of paddling in chop.

Of coarse with a big heavy kite like in the video it’s gonna need more wind to relaunch but with the clouds it has to be almost zero wind for me not to relaunch/body drag to my board.
