Can somebody help and describe in more detail the "carving upwind hard" part?

http://www.mackiteboarding.com/news/hyd ... ide-ep-05/

The instructions above say, do NOT approach it as a back-roll and not lean back as it only works on a long mast and fast foil wing.. I have an Onda and I move slow.

I can't seem to make the board turn without leaning back as in initiating the back-roll.

Do you use a "back foot" or a "front foot" to drive the board into a carve if you are not leaning back? Please somebody help with a writeup of the carve?
In the video he seem to be sitting down before the carve, but I can't seem do duplicate that move.

Thank you.
-D.

The idea is to stand pretty upright for this tack to work.

To turn a hydrofoil you have to make the yaw move, as described earlier.

You dont turn a hydrofoil by leaning and edge pressure, like on a surfboard, but can do it from an almost upright position, by twisting your body, meaning you pull your front foot towards you, and push the rear foot away from you.

For the duck tack to work well, you have to stand more upright.

One can do very upright tight 360s (if you can), but also lean back 360s which are fun.

But leaning back too much dont work if you want to duck tack (or roll tack).

Disagree that you have to lean back on longer masts and faster wings - IMO no difference from these to the Onda and similar, in this respect, same technique.

Practice making slalom turns back and fourth on the same tack, till you get the feel of how to yaw really fast and tight - this should lead you into being able to tack more upright when needed :thumb:

When I learned this (its basically an aborted carving 360), the following was the most important:
As Peter mentioned, staying upright is key. So go with speed about half wind, BEND YOUR KNEES, and carve briefly upwind while concentrating having your weight FORWARD (this will keep you centered on the board, I realised that a short impulse is much better than a continuous carve). This will carry you until you basically face 180 degrees opposite the direction you were coming from. Ideally, you will stand completely centered on your board at this moment. Now you just have to get the kite timing right to carry on, but that was not your question.
So: Bend the knees, lean forward a bit and do a short carve. It helps to leave the back hand off the bar in the first part of the carve before you start pulling the bar in and steer the kite.

Can someone explain the meaning of "Duck". Is there another type of tack?

I had a hard time with this at first too. I suggest being sure the kite is almost at apex and pulling in on the bar as you start your upwind carve.

Thank you guys!! This is a VERY VERY helpful description of what to practice and how to approach it. Will work on it this weekend.
Again, thank you for good advice.
