how short can a mast for freeride/freerace be?!

Postby butterfish » Sat Dec 22, 2018 8:24 am

hello

aa written i want to know how short a mast can be for freeride or freerace. most of the foilers use masts between 90-110cm. thats too long for my shallow homespot. does it make sense to use a 70-80cm mast for freerace?!

cheers

Going for speed in a shallow spot sounds like a sure way to wreck a foil.

I use the 30”/76cm mast often. I switch from kite to surf boards so changing the mast can be a pain on the beach.

Works great for lightwind kite foiling and moderate chop. Also it is easier when I want to ride a few waves into the shallows.

Downsides are higher wind when the big short chop picks up and your upwind angles are not as great.

Or your ankles if strapped.

It depends on how flat the water you're riding in and your skill level. I use a Moses 41cm mast in a very shallow spot on occasion but it's not my primary or favorite mast. It's only because I'm too lazy to slog out 100 yards to get barely waist deep. The room for error on a short mast is very small and even smaller if there's chop. 70-80cm is plenty for freeriding and my favorite surf mast is 60cm. It has been a while since I rigged my 107cm mast and the last thing I recall while using it is thinking how damn high I'm riding.
