Will regular sewing thread work for (whipping)sewing the splice together cause the stuff one would buy is .5or .8 or 1mm thick seems a bit thick no? For 4mm and less diameter lines..
You need to use UV protected sewing line

You can use any thread to lock a splice. Polyester is better. Bonded polyester is best. Upholstery thread is quite good. Cotton or nylon not so good. A run through a sewing machine is good. A few hand stitches is fine. I bought the end of a spool from a sail maker for a few dollars and I've been using that for years.

Almost any splice you make in kite lines is going to be locked into a lark's head or a hitch or something. There's no way it will slip once it's installed. It can slip if the loop is free and not under load. The stitching is simply to hold the line in place when there's no tension. It doesn't need to be strong or super robust.

I am not a fan of the brummell splice. It is difficult to get accurate lengths. It works ok on thinnish line. It's not suitable for very thin line (it can damage very thin line). It looks ugly on thick line (You can get a bit of a sticky out loop thing where thick line passes through then goes back into the core. It's ugly.)

Sewed splices can be made and adjusted to very high levels of accuracy. You don't really need extreme accuracy or precision with kite lines and stuff, but it's nice to do it properly.

Guitar string is good for splicing very thin line (foil kite bridle lines or race kite lines). It's probably a bit thin for most flying lines. A thin D-Splicer is good.

Get yourself some D splicer scissors if you're doing a lot of splicing. It cuts Dyneema very neatly.
