Surf/wave wing thickness and NACA profiles

Hey men,

If you have one of the new larger wings for riding waves and you measure the maximum thickness of that wing.

Also if anyone knows what the closest naca wing profiles are to the new surf wings please post that up too.

Ive not measured it, but my Moses 630 is 20+ mm thick. has quite a lot of concave on bottom profile. Looks like a Speer 105 to me.
The LF impulse has very similar look and thickness to the profile, but the planform and dihedral is quite different on those 2- but they feel very similar in the water.
Been meaning to try to use my phone 3D scanner to scan the Moses.....

6412 and similar related are often cited, as well as the h105, but remember h105 came into view during the early moth and C class foiling development, which were very different platforms. Most included trimmable flaps on the TE and were high to very high aspect ratio multiple foio platforms.........

BWD 6412 is similar to what i used on my build. I'm thinking it might be too high thin in profile.

Ive made a few wings now and can upload pics at one point. My experience tells me that the thickness of the wing is dependent on what type and size of waves you will be riding.
My large 34 inch wing is 1.5 inches thick and is is my 28 inch wing. They both are pretty slow but have very good lift in slow smaller waves. Anything over shoulder high they can offer too much lift fro, speed and max out.

I will be making a 30 inch wide* 9 inch Chord * ~1.1 inch thick wing in the near future for faster waves and higher top speed. There are a couple of waves around here that are very long but quite fast with a pitchy take off.

If everything else is kept the same, does more thickness=more lift?

I think the short answer is yes. The longer answer is also more thickness the more drag aswell. So there is a lift/drag ratio that will be optimal given the application

In general:

Camber (meaning the "average" curve a line between the top and bottom of the wing got) is almost solely decisive for the max lift.

Meaning, if you have a very very thin curved wing, like a seagull wing can be, it will have the most lift and quite low drag too when riding at high lift.
It can not operate at low AOA's very well though, extreme drag here so going fast is impossible.
And also quite big stabs needed as the moment of torque is the "worst" on these.

Say you got a wing just like above on the top side (same curve), but flat on the bottom, thus a really thick wing instead, it will have somewhat less max lift actually.
BUT, it can operate at higher speeds (lower AOA) without being superslow, but not really fast either.

If you got a thin wing, with lower camber, it will be way better than both of above, for going fast, and also very stable and easy, thus the race choice.

Lastly, one could use a symmetrical (same curve on top as well as bottom side) really really thick profile, and get a lot of lift.
It will be the worst choice of all though, as you dont need the ability to ride "upside down", so it will have the most drag of all wings when lift - only at high speeds it can be a tad better (but still slow) than the seagull superthin high cambered wing, but way way more draggy than the two most common wings mentioned.

The thinner the wing, and the sharper the nose of the wing is, the more violent it will stall, and reverse, the thicker blunt wings will have a very easy soft stall, but cost is more drag.

These are some basic fundamentals about different wings and what they do best/worst :thumb:

Just calipered the “naish thrust surf large”, its 3.3 cm thick at the thickest point in the center.

Only slight concave on underside front to back.
