Gong strutless impressions

Postby lightwind » Sun Mar 03, 2019 10:51 am

I’m considering buying Gong strutless V3 kite in size 12 for foiling in light wind days. I’m 75 kg intermediate rider with freeride foil, and don’t have problems foiling with my 9m kite with 3 struts in winds above 10-11 knots. What I need is something that can stay in the air in light wind 6-9 knots (foil kite is not option). Price of Gong strutless V3 is very attractive so I would be happy to hear what you guys think about this kite.

Thanks

i have a 12m gong strutless V2, not sure how different V3 is.
its a good kite overall, it gets me going in 8-9 knots but I am a beginner, I hear people fly it in less wind...

things to be aware of are that you will likely be overpowered in 12 knots, the water relaunch in low wind is very limited. it also flutters at times.

On what wing it gets you going? What is the build quality? Do you have feeling that will work in less wind? Thanks.

i have a 12m. build quality seems to be very good. I was reading the gong forum and apparently, the guy who designs gong kites flies a 12m strutless in 6knots at 100kg using very long extensions and a 69cm bar.

That comparison of the Gong V2 & Cloud could be interesting for you.

Btw I would consider a one strut for better relaunch, watch his second video.

Hi Jumptheshark, You are right, Patrice the owner, designer, of GONG, is a very accomplished Longboard Surfer, Windsurfer, Foilsurfer.
I used to SUP surf his Boards, they always delivered the characteristics of the design. I haven't used the kites, but I may do. I'm certainly thinking of buying a new Directional/Kitesurf board from them, from previous experience, it will do exactly as expected.

The Kite will hopefully be just as good .

I was thinking the same but they have 13 m and 10,2 m size for one strut model. Not sure what will work for me. Should 13 be to big and heavy and 10,2 just not enough for 7-9 knots?

I’ve flown the V1 6m and I think 9m and the V2 12m. The 6m works well the 9m has a tendency for the canopy to fold over the leading edge when setting up for duck tacks, the 12m is good but I’d say you are pushing it’s ability sub 8knots.
6knots requires a ram air kite.
