Ghost Whisper 101/590/330 top speed?

Postby deniska » Thu Mar 21, 2019 1:56 am

I tried friend's brand new rig (just out of plastic) today: Hypermiler 2019 with GW 101/590/330.
It rode very stable and quiet at medium speeds 15-20mph but every time I'd try to push it a bit more it would suddenly dive and eject me.
Did anyone experience that?
The mast was set all the way to the back (at 0) and everything felt pretty balanced at medium speeds..
I would expect it to go a bit faster and exert more pressure on the front foot with speed instead of diving..
Any ideas?

for me it nosedives only when catching something on the wing. I can go way faster easily

yeah.. it was very strange and that's why I posted..
I got 2 consecutive crashes so don't think it was coincidence.

breaching and/ or rider error
can you elaborate?
I am pretty sure I did not breach the surface, quite the opposite, was trying to go low speeding up for a jump.
Rider error - maybe.. this is why I am asking..
but my point is I was going on a straight line crosswind all nice and stable just until "BUM"

Perhaps I was a bit harsh, no offence meant.

I rode a 590/330 combo for over 50 hrs. Never had that behaviour.
Both my 550 and 590 are sensitive to getting any sea grass on the wing, they lose a lot of lift. The 633 is not.
I did notice that any breach or tip ventilation on them was more critical and difficult to recover from compared to the 633
Both the 590 and 633 don't like to be pushed hard with a lot of power upwind with board heeled way over. I'm on 2016 93cm fluente mast.

I'm not a racer or pro/advanced level rider, basically cruise around doing carves and riding small swells.

If your looking to increase front foot pressure to give you something to drive against then move the mount a touch further forward,

It might feel a bit sticky to get lift off until you are st speed but it should balance out and let you drive against it.

To me it sounds like cavitation caused by grease or oils smeared on the lifting surfaces, even sweaty hands deposit enough body oils to cause cavitation,
avoid furniture polish which has oils in its formula,
these oils are sometimes invisible to the naked eye, but do cause the effect you describe,
wash all surfaces with a warm soapy cloth, not hand soap but simple washing up liquid which will dissolve any oily residue, then rinse with warm water and paper dry.
I do this each and every time I go foiling, it used to drive me mad before I found out what was causing it.

TomW, no offence taken.. appreciate any feedback.
As I mentioned, I tried to go a bit faster than the usual carve speed, but nothing too crazy (probably around 20mph maybe a little faster)
James, I did not notice any significant pressure on the front foot as I would expect with higher speed.. quite the opposite.

Foil, that was my suspicion too.. The guy assembled it out of a shipping box all new and shiny.. maybe it needed a windex swipe, who knows..
Next time he brings it we'll try it..

Set it all the way to the front and adjust it in small steps to the back when you feel too much front foot pressure.

When riding fast it is better to have a foil with too much lift than a foil that wants to dive as soon as you apply some pressure on your front foot.
