Fun riding the new Duotone Wing

I rode the Duotone 2,3,4 foilwings on a fanatic 2000 hydrofoil. I first learned to ride it in flat water beam reaches, then advanced to 6-9 mile downwind Maui runs. I absolutely love it, and didn’t want to give it back to Ken Winner, the designer. I feel free like a bird flying. I’m a 125lb female non-pro athlete and have no problem without a harness. Downwind the wind holds it for you basically. I used to SUP downwind (non-competitive) and hurt my shoulder paddling, so for me I am stoked to be able to downwind again. It’s so much easier and more fun than with a paddle. You can go deep downwind, that you could never do on a kite or windsurfing. You can luff it and use the waves, and when you wallow, pull in a little on the wing and overcome that. I think it is going to be a success now because it is inflatable, light weight(3lbs), portable, and big surf foils need such little pump to get foiling. I will see if I can post a video. I will always love kiting waves but this is a nice way to get away from crowds and have fun.

You can go deep downwind, that you could never do on a kite or windsurfing.

I'd have to ask your level of kitesurfing ability because:
1) If you loop the kite you can go directly downwind, not sure what deep downwind means though TBH
2) If you used a kite like Flysurfer Peak or BRM Cloud you can go pretty much directly downwind without looping the kite and still use the kite to get back upwind

I think the wing will be a success, but it's not for kiter or wsurfers.

It's 100% aimed at the SUP community and they are already $4k in to their rigs so getting them to buy a $600 wing that only really works in 20+ knots and only goes downwind will be an easy sell. Try and sell that to someone who already kites and ... good luck.

im riding ocean trade wind swell waves. It’s a fantastic floating flying feeling that if you haven’t done a hydrofoil downwinder it’s hard to explain. There is a sense of freedom without lines and a harness and a bar and you are a small footprint. I don’t look at this as a replacement, it’s another toy in my garage. I have Kites and surf bairds and sup boards and bikes, and snowboards, and now I want to have a wing for the right wing conditions. I definitely don’t plan to give up kiting. Why would I have to choose...

If you kite foil, pulling out a sup is pretty much dead calm conditions only.

No one here is gonna waste a 2o knot day on that shit.

I wonder if some people here are taking kiting for granted?
In 1997 or so I heard about Naish, Flash, Laird, some French dudes and Roessler kiting. I wondered if it would ever become “a thing.” In 1999 I had to ollie over some guys kite lines while windsurfing, never saw him get a good ride...
4 years later I was doing it with AR5 & a plastic bic surfboard in Cabarete...
So I wouldn’t discount it completely, you never know what the future brings.
Unless you make it yourself!
Same story with hydrofoils a few years later...
That said, kites do seem to have unique advantages.

When I first saw it I thought it was pretty lame. But if you can get sufficient power to get out and catch a wave then completely depower it while you ride the wave, well that would be pretty cool.

It might also be fun for getting out in mega storm winds that are not really safe for kiting.

Mega storm!! I'm already wondering how you go about recovering from a fall in shore break or even just getting out through a break with that set up. Especially without a paddle. You gotta carry it to foil depth, has to be difficult to hand paddle with a wing in one hand, then stand on it and sail downwind likely toward shore for most people, enough to get foiling then foil out through white water? Note the complete side shore conditions in the clips. I can imagine its a handful to manhandle two separate pieces that big if you fall and get washed by even small waves let alone mega storm. The average joe SUPer is going to need a monster size board compared to what were seeing here, which pretty much rules out pumping to assist.

For every 30 sec clip of a pro catching a wave and jibing to head back out, you gotta imagine the hours of flopping around that an average joe is gonna have to put in.

If it's just the start of something new, then its got a long way to go.

When even the pros make it look pedestrian, its probably pretty long until we see someone make it look good.

As to it being an open ocean downwinder only thing....... Who does that?

They'll make a bunch because they are likely cheap to make. Well see how well they sell.

Good points about how to get it going starting on the beach.

With a normal kite, you can clip a leash onto the pump leash point and the kite will hover upside down on the end of the leash if the wind is steady enough.

They seem to attach a wrist leash to the nose of the wing, so there is a possibility that the wing might naturally hover in the air on the end of that leash.
A waistband that the leash could be attached to might allow for the kite to hover while you got out to where you can get onto a sup foil and hand paddle it past the shorebreak.

Those are some of the questions that have to be answered, or solutions developed for.
