The times I have needed a knife I have needed it instantly and had to pull it out and use it one handed. Taking the time to pull out a folded knife and use it would have been inconvenient (tangled in fishing line, sometimes with an angry fisherman on the end), or possibly fatal (line looped around an ankle during a 60knot squall).

The last thing I would want with me in the water is a sharp bare bladed knife. You're almost guaranteed to slice into something important like flesh. :o
