Race Hydrofoil - initial sanding and maintenance

Postby BlindRider » Fri Apr 05, 2019 6:33 am

Hey all!

My Moses Havok set is here in a few days, and I have no idea how to sand the foil out of the box to be race ready.
Can someone explain it? I heard it makes a significant difference.

How do you keep a race foil in best shape after the first sanding? Cleaning? Washing? Please share your tips & tricks! :?: :jump:

I found a pretty detailed description, but it seems to be a bit more complicated than I thought...

Good question, it is kind of a shame that there is not more sharing of info on this. I tried the rift method and did not like it, felt like it made the ventilations worse for me. But there are so many variables that it is hard to say what is best. Now I lightly sanded my 2018 Comet with 1200 and 2000 grit all over to remove the shine, definitely improves the speed. But what is more important is cleaning. Every 2nd session I clean the mast with soap and water using a cloth or green pad. It really helps and I notice that the ventilations increase in line with time spent since the last cleaning. So it must be some sort of microscopic build up on the mast of algae, salt, who knows. Of course greasy fingers and hands touching the mast are also guaranteed to cause ventilations. Another thing, I went to the Caribbean with the same foil, there were almost no ventilations at all in the salty warm water compared to my home spot in north Europe. So there seems to be some room for further understanding here. Would be nice if the pros would add their experiences.

I'd start with a thorough soapy wash down. If that doesn't provide the experience you're looking for, I'd go over it evenly with a sanding block and 800-1200 paper, then hit it with 2000 all over. I don't know if I totally buy all this "directional sanding" stuff, but I definitely try to use smooth, straight strokes with the sandpaper and do not sand the bottom side of your front wing or top side of your back wing.

Ah ah ah ah ah !

The moses paint seems to be a real shame ... a friend has to sand it totally..
it's cheapper for moses to put a quick paint compare to paid someone to sand it... so you gonna spend some hours on it !
