mad crash on a foil

Postby Foil » Wed May 01, 2019 9:39 am

You might have seen this already, but I have just found it and keep wondering how he was not cut in half or at least be very badly injured,
check the 2nd impact from high up with the foil directly in front of him, yikes!

Mind you this is X world foil champ Florian Gruber showing how to boost (or not in this case)

If customers and kite manufacturers want to learn from this one:

There is a pretty easy and effectiv solution for the "Hang your front wing in the low Y"-Problem

It has also happened to me a few times and there are further not less spectacular videos.

If you just rise your Y point to about 2-3 m above the trimmer instead to have it just about 20 cm above. I am sure this will solve about 90% of this kind of accidents!

I have already one bar constructed like this, the original goal was to reduce line wear while lines/kite is turned around / looped. But it has also this benefit.

The cons of this bar setup are small:
- very rare times during complicated relaunch situations on foil kites you want to grab just one front line
- you will have to ride with 2 m more lines or a higher Y angle, 99% of kiters who are not racing not a real problem

After this final shot in front, I am now sure that I will have this 2 m Y Setup on all my bars in the future. So thanks for the helpful link

i have had it happen just once, (not the jump thing above but the hanging wing tangle)
where the board shoots up in the air and then hangs by the front wing in the Y split above the main center line,
it is probably the worst tangle to get in, as all the sharp bit are stuck in front of you as your being pulled into them,
if the kite loops at this point then you see what happens in the 2nd crash in the above video

Now I understand. Whole time i was thinking about kite /because this kite is high AR wing/ and you was talking about hydrofoil wing. So one front line is much less prone to stuck HF wing than 2? Correct? I never had HF in lines but thats probably from conservative riding :)

Now when i look at it - it also looks like his kite is backstalled and depower is stuck. Anyway for me it looks like too much kite for wind in first place. I dont think for HF jumping you need to be that much powered.

Botched re-direct combined with a pendulum too far under the kite... equals slack lines, doesn't keep the mast down after tumbling the landing, kite dropping and slack lines scooping up the foil before being powered up again. He's also clearly carrying too much kite (probably for some big boosts) which amplifies the error.

Hard to see what exactly happened.

He crashes, and then his HF got tangled in the lines which causes the kite to loop ?

Or maybe a line got wrapped around the bar...since I’m the second loop the board is already gone...

Hahaha,, Been there done that a time for 3 before. The old swing under the super powered foild to fly it out of the wind window for it to float back and wang through the powerzone trick.

Its a goodie....
