Broken Strut

Postby revhed » Thu May 02, 2019 1:44 pm

While up flying.
f k broke.JPG
Flew this garage built, not by me, very thin 11 mm,high mod, full carbon, foam core, STRUT hard for 2 years.
Always protected well during transport, no dings.
Was lucky to have crashed and got my hand around it before it sank.
Although does not look so nice was very fine wet sanded 800g, and "cut" well with little or no ventilation, will miss her.
Always amazed me the stress a KBHF STRUT endurs and now have proof.

That’s another reason to use foil masts, not kbhf struts.

The only "mast" on ANY foil board would be on one with a sail, as in Sail board hydrofoil, SBHF!
You hang sails on masts,
You support foil boards with STRUTS.
Read any dictionary!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrofoil
"Description
The hydrofoil usually consists of a wing like structure mounted on struts below"
Or ask the one who gave us our current base design,
https://nextfoils.com/foils/
Or he who builds fast modern KBHFs,
http://www.mikeslab.com/
https://www.deltahydrofoil.com/shopfoil ... -hydrofoil
So strange that in a world where more and more English words are being used, and most correctly, that here a French word is used
"mat" translated INCORRECTLY to mast, and simply the wrong word for STRUT, PERIOD.
But alas, all ass....

Yah the Airchair predates all of these brands and they call it a T-bar, I lean toward mast over strut but if you want to get technical and pound your chest over which is right... they are both wrong.

The foils i have bought were sold with a part called a “mât.” I would have bought them if they called it a “strut,” but they don’t. Nothing has broken yet.

Since it concerns major part failure, I hope some DIYers and maybe manufacturers are reading this topic.

Here is an idea for you: route a groove or two in your cores and lay in some webbing or small nylon lines bedded in flexible epoxy to prevent loss of parts on case of laminate failure. Monetary cost small, weight cost also small. Potential savings large. Probably no manufacturer would do it, its an extra step and might seem to imply the unpleasant reality that it is possible for things to break, and nothing is perfect, neither rider nor equipment...
At any rate If I did a diy mast (or strut, or fuselage) I would consider it as a way to avoid losing my effort/investment in case of failure...

In this world there are no SBHFs nor sail boards. Nor there is KBHFs. And there ain’t no other world than this.

Traditional ship hydrofoils are supported by struts or some weird angled structures, I agree.

But, we still call American Natives “Indians” :) and that explains how this world is so much fun to be in.

You can imagine a hydrofoil mast being a sail mast just protruding down to have fuselage attached to it, or as some call it “fuse”, except top portion holding the sail has been eliminated. Maybe because gods wanted this evolution to happen (note: not all gods wanted evolution to be a thing)

Wrong!
Mike Murphy (respect) co founded Air chair, then Next.
Always called vert element STRUT and NEVER even considered any other name!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sit-down_hydrofoil
"Foil assembly - a long strut, usually around 3 feet long, connected to a fuselage carrying a front wing (for lift) and a rear wing (for stability). This allows the rider to turn and go up and down.[3]"
And more info, "T bar" implies the STRUT and fuse hence the name.
Enough said, history leaves clues....

And why not to call it a keel since it also serves directional/stability function?

In the dictionary “strut” is a rod or bar btw, and a synonym to “mast”

I thought that Grigory's initial reply was hilarious (if read verbatim), but as the discussion deviated into a more serious tone, I have a proposal which would settle this terminology quibble once and for all. Let's call it not mast, nor strut, but chassis! Here is why: the airplane fuselage is connected to what? Wings on one side, and chassis on the other!
