Interesting Peter... I guess you like it to slide a lot.

I prefer a more limited movement. My Ion bar has B=15cm and I have set A=3cm. Obviously mine only slides a few cm in each direction which is just fine for me.
It is personal preference.

See my harness, A is only about 1 inch even under load it hardly gets much more than that which is pretty close to your body, right?

Of course not "zero", but zero would be the goal :D

Ok, it is possible to go shorter and also harness becomes a bit cleaner looking when rope isn't hanging out. I'm not saying usual way to attach rope isn't working, it is.

If rope would really keep A at 1in under loading (body weight 80kg) and having B (rope length) 8in, it would mean enormous tension to the rope: quickly calculated over 9 tons. This same method can been used to pull a car from the ditch (if strong rope can be tightened somewhere appropriately).

Physically pulling straight rope from the middle is very bad situation if that rope is meant to be as straight as possible.

The bar is usually bent so it will not get so high forces.
If you have a tight rope, the connection will not be as stable in the middle of the rope. If you have a bit of slack it moves in opinion more controlled from side to side and is also stable in the middle.

Yes, that is true. But in practice you can try to get it as tight as possible, because it anyway will not stay tight. My method to do it makes A perhaps inch shorter, mainly it just looks better.

Interesting. I know only one method how this distance can be shortened from the usual and I've invented it. If rope is attached like it is drawn in the OP's picture it can never be as close to body as it is possible. Do you use some different way to do it?

For B I have about 10in. There wasn't room for more than that but I think it is enough.
So how do you get the lines (A) as short as possible?

A is 6 cm, B is 18.5 cm on my ion composite slider bar.
Total travel sideways is 22cm. Bit of slack in the line gives longer travel. Nice and smoth transitions. Tried shorter A but experienced twitchier transitions and not as stable in the middle. Depower throw is more than enough.

I got sloppy when replacing the rope. now it is a bit slack (longer "A" dimension) could be as much as 5-6 inches. Still works fine, enough reach for me. I found that having quick release too close to the spreader on my Vega sit harness (using Slingshot Talon metal loop) was detrimental to the comfort. now i use standard plastic loop over the rope with slack rope. this keeps the bar at comfy position foiling both heel and toe side. very personal, me thinks

Yes. The knots will slip and tighten so I also tie as short as possible. Once under load it works out to about the right length for me.

Here is the new 2019 ION spreader bar. It has a plastic body with thick foam pad. The rope is adjustable. It appears compatible with Dakine harnesses.

Hi,
I have been testing a sliding spreader bar and playing with different line lenghts, but after a few days went back to my old homemade spreader, that has a fix point in the midle of the spreader bar, but allows to swivel and rotate in all ways. I just did not see any advantage with the sliding rope, it just felt wird for me. Mind that i am riding toeside almost half the time being on the water...
We really are all different and not all like the same things, so testing for yourself is allways best...
