It's all in the arms. Alternating backwards and forwards with each pump.
This looks efficient, comfortable, but still a bit goofy, yeah.

Foil pumping on a bridge!

I am also not a fan of flat water foil pumping ... Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. ;-)
But it is impressive that these people can make this work, including dock starts, beach starts, etc.
There's another video that was a bit of a wow, a wakesurfing pro who dock starts, pumps to a passing boat, then proceeds to rip up the wake pretty much forever, back to the dock with dry hair. Even the most jaded among us would be hard pressed to not consider it "cool". Will post it if I can find it.

Everything Philippe Caneri does is cool!

And if its not really, he does it in a local that makes up for it an so comes out being cool in the end.

I'm amazed at how well pumping is going. Super extended !!

Love the feeling of throwing a pump in here and there, and add it into a lot of tight little carves, but I'm a kiter through and through.

Actually have mad respect for the pumpers. Like Parkour, its not something I want to do, but mad respect. They are the only others foiling on small boards. Decent surf foilers too, but they are pretty much the same group. IMO a few windfoilers are beginning to make it looks good with laid out jibes and freestyle type airs. The large size of a SUP is a huge handicap to the cool factor. Might be super fun, but it got no appeal for me, and I rate the wing foiling at the very bottom.

Like pumping a surf board but goofier. Not very stylish but effective (sometimes...). I doubt 10 years on will make pumping any more stylish.
What I foresee are foils that build speed my quick turning, like a skateboard?

foil pumping is actually really cool and addictive if you get into it ... only once you've done it and touched it you will stop thinking it is stupid or goofy ...
my take on it is :

- it is an amazing cardio workout = so it is usefull for any other sport you want to do
- find a patch of water and you can basically ride any urban and off limits spot

In a Hote Pool for eg

I can see how this would be fun and I hope to one day actually be able to do it. Though I really doubt you're going to convince many people! Personally,
I have lots of experience in sports that feel way more fun than they look:
[*] Surfing point breaks in side-on wind: looks like such a mess, but a well defined wave will give a nice ride.
[*] SUP foil: transform otherwise unsurfable tiny crap waves into "wow" ... but good luck convincing anyone until they actually try it.
[*] SUP in general: paddle away from the crowd, get a wave in every set, surf 5x the waves anyone else is getting...yet you're still a kook and the scourge of the ocean.
[*] kite foiling too: the average twintip jumper or kitesurf wave specialist watches, sneers, and leaves the beach to chop firewood. Until they get one, then it's super rad.

I am just learning to surf foil, after a year of SUP foiling, so pumping is coming soon! I figure next in the kooky hit parade will be the wind wing ... another joyful toy that look goofy and lame, but presents possibilities for ocean fun.

I'm sure there will be innovations, maybe a hinged wing or something that gives a force multiplier or something.
I read somewhere that http://zfins.eu from Estonia have just released a front wing with a flexible trailing edge. Targeted for racing where this feature allows higher speeds.
Curious if it would facilitate pumping.
