Seat harness better for foiling?

Postby Macster » Sat Jun 01, 2019 9:05 am

I sold my seat harness about 6 years ago and never looked back (waist harness nowadays).

If you're into freeride foiling is there advantage or disadvantage of a seat harness? I'm still using a hook harness, no spreader bar but maybe I could get a second waist harness with a spreader / rope...?

Thoughts?

I should clarify, I have never ridden a foil with a seat harness...

I went back to a seat harness when foiling. I feel I have better control and it supports me a bit during maneuvers (I do only freestyle, no racing). Went for the super simple Neil Pryde RSX harness, very basic, no padding.
When I ride twin tip, I use a normal waist harness.

No point at all for FREERIDE wave foiling - whenever you like ride upright and want to move around your board go WAIST.
Whenever you want sit and crank upwind, hold power and be stiff in optimum trim position go SEAT

I started with the Fusion and Dynabar and was happy with it, then for some reason I forget, I tried my Mystic Star (hybrid) and ... that's all I use for the foil now.

I'm sure you know I ride smaller kites and bigger wings and I don't like to be powered, so even for my dicky back it feels fine.

Oh now I remember -- I wanted the additional freedom of leg movement to really get to grips with strapless foiling.

Use a seat harness and fixed hook only for TT riding...

I switched to a seat harness with rope spreader and it was immediately beneficial for me. No more riding up, easier on toe side with the rope spreader, really no negatives for me at this point. I didn’t notice any conditioning to get used to it either.

I use boardshort harness with rope spreader, which is like a very minimalist seat harness. I also have a ride engine and a dakine c1 waist harnesses, but waist harnesses always ride up on me and give me back pain. The only reason I would choose a waist harness over board short harness is for very heavy loads like boosting or racing. For regular free ride use, you just don’t need the extra support and board short harness is less constrictive then seat harness.

board shorts harness 100% with rope slider.
comfortable, no back strain, no ride up.just works for me.
apart from climbing up a 4 ft wall to the grass bank, which is the only downside.
rope slider is the biggest change for me, bin the hook forever.

Like others, I've tried all types of harnesses. For foilboard, I've settled on a boardshorts harness with a sliding rope spreader. It's a minimalist harness and stays fairly low, even with the rope slider. The rope spreader makes a huge difference in toeside riding on the foil, although I really don't like the movement of the slider during a power stroke. But once on foil, both the boardshorts and slider are a good combination.
